DETACHABLE OPERA-GLASS HOLDER.

My invention has relation to an improved pera-glass holder; and my object is to proide a holder readily attachable and detachable, with means for operating the lenses of the opera-glass, so as to vary the foci while the operator is looking through them without necessitating the removal of the glass from the eyes or the raising of the hand to the glass. I accomplish this object by means of the device shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder detached from the glass. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a pair of opera-glasses provided with 7 my improved handle; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my device attached to a pair of opera-glasses.

In the annexed drawings, the numeral 1 represents the handle of my device, made of any suitable material, having a top piece 2 integral therewith. At each end of the top piece 2, projecting upward, are cars 3, made of some spring or other suitable material, adapted to contract slightly at their upper ends. The center of the handle 1 is bored out, and fitted therein is a rod 4, provided at its lower extremity with a small disk 5, said disk having milled edges. The upper extremity of this rod 1 has a thread or worm 7 thereon, as plainly indicated in the drawings.

The numeral 8 represents an opera-glass of ordinary construction having the usual bracepieces 9 9 and provided with the ordinary small pinion 10, secured between braces 9 9 in any desired manner. On each side of the brace-rods 9 9 are shoulders 11 11,adapted to act as guides for the ears 3 of the handle 1, when adjusting the handle to the glass. These stops also serve to keep the detachable handle in place when on the glasses.

In securing the handle to the glass the two brace-pieces 9 9 of the opera-glass are inserted Serial No. 378,415. (No model.)

between each of the two jaws 3 of the handle 1, the guides or stops 11 11 on the brace-pieces serving to assist in adjusting the handle to the glass and to retain it in its proper position when so adjusted.

The guides 11 11 are so arranged with reference to the handle 1 that when the ears 3 are in position on the braces 9 9 and abutting against the said guides the worm 7 on the end of rod 4 will be in a proper position to engage with the worm-pinion 10, which adjusts the lenses of the opera-glasses.

As is obvious, when the parts are in the proper position for use the operator may by simply turning the disk 5 one Way or the other regulate the focus of the glass to suit his eyes.

From the above description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is exceedingly plain that my device is simple in operation and construction, durable in use, and cheap to manufacture.

The handle of the device being detachable is a very desirable feature, since the glass and handle may be contained in a much smaller and more compact receptacle than if the handle were rigidly secured to the operaglass.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. An opera glass holder provided with means at its end for securing thereto the 0pera-glass and with a rod arranged interiorly and lengthwise of the holder for regulating the foci of the lenses of the opera-glass.

2. In combination with an opera-glass holder having a worm-pinion, a detachable holder therefor provided with a rod having a worm at one end adapted to engage the pinion on the opera-glass, as set forth.

3. An opera-glass holder provided with ears to engage the frame-work of the glass and with a rod arranged lengthwise thereof having a worm at one end and means whereby it may be rotated at the other end, as set forth.

Hinkel, of Washington, District of Goluihbia, for an improvement in Detachable Opera-Glass Holders, was erroneously issued to the said Hinkel as owner of said invention; whereas said Letters Patent should have been issued to Basil M. Wilkerson, of New York, N. Y., said Wilkerson being assignee" of the entire interest in said invention as shown by the assignments of record in this Office; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent OEfice.
