ROCKING ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,080, dated March 15, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROACH, a

` citizen of the'United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocking Attach'- ments for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention has relation to platform rocking-chairs, and has for its object the provision of a platform rocking attachment adapted to be applied to chairs of ordinary construction, so as to immediately transform such chairs into platform rocking-chairs.

My invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In carrying my invention into effect I provide two similar base-boards, such as are commonly employed to form the base-pieces of an ordinary platform-rocker, and to these baseboards I attach, by properly-arranged levers and braces, tilting or rocking arms, which are providedwith sockets adapted to receive the legs of achair, the whole being so arranged, as will b'e hereinafter specifically described, that by placing the legs of a chair in the sockets on the rocking arms, the chair will be immediately capable of use as a platform-rocker.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a chair with my improvement applied thereto; Fig. 2, a top view of one of the rocking attachments, and Fig. 3 a front elevation of the chair.

B designates a rocking arm, which is pivotally supported at a short distance above and parallel with the base A upon braces a a, which are secured to said rocking arm by a bolt or pivot b. The braces a a incline from opposite directions toward the pivot b, and are suitably secured to the base A.

The rocking arm B is slotted at C C, and

in these slots are placed metallic rings or loops 5o D D, each of which has a screw threaded tongue e, that projects through the slot, and

is provided with a nut E, by means of which the rings may be drawn farther into the slots to tighten the grasp upon the legs F F of the chair G. The legs F F of the chair G t into the rings D D, and project a considerable distance through the same, so far that the height of the chair when the rocking attachment is applied is not much greater than the chair 6o without the attachment.

In addition to being pivotally supported upon the braces a a the rocking arm B is attached to the base A by means of two sets of toggle-levers h h c' t' at each end. The toggle- 6'5 levers h 71, are pivotally attached to the rocking arm B by means of bolts h h', and the toggle-levers c' o' are pivotally securedto the bases A A by bolts o" fi, and the levers h h' and c' i are pivotally secured together by bolts 7o If desired, the bases A A may be connected together by suit-able cross-braces, and the rocking arms B B may be similarly connected, so that the rocking attachment will form 7 51': a connected structure; but for rendering the attachment easy to pack and transport, I would suggest that such cross-braces, if employed,be so arranged as to be easily detachable. The attachment, as described, can be 8o very readily manufactured at alow price, and when attached t0 a chair of ordinary construction Will serve to transform such chair into a platform-rocker.

If it is found that the chair rocks too easily on the base, the fault may be corrected by tightening up the bolts that secure the togglelevers 'together and to the base and rocking arm.

Having described my invention, I claim- 9o l. A rocking attachment adapted to be attached to a chair and comprising a base, a rocking arm pivotally att-ached to standards projecting upwardly from said base, and means, substantially as described, for detachably securing the legs of a chair to said rocking arm, as set forth.
