To all whom it may concern..-

Be it known that I, JAMES A. JAMISON, of Russellville, in the county of Pope and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Fire Box and Grate, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in fire boxes and grates; and the object of my invention is to produce a tire box and grate which is specially adapted for use in tireplaces or open stoves, which may be cheaply constructed, and which is put together in such a manner that if any portion of it breaks the broken part may be easily and cheaply renewed.

To this end my invention consists in a tire box and grate the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a front View of the fire box and grate, showing it upon its support and with the support in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical. section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 with the cap of the front supporting-bar removed. Fig. 4 is a detail inside elevation of one of the side pieces of the box. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the front grate-supporting bar, and Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of one of the grate-bars.

The tire-box 10 is adapted to rest upon a suitable supporting-base 11, which is hollowed out, as at 12, to provide space for the ash-box, and the tire-box and base are preferably halved together, as shown at 13 in Fig. 1, so that they will iit snugly. The fire-box is provided with a back piece 14, which terminates at its upper end iu a rearwardly-extending flange 142, which is adapted to enter the ilue of the nre-place or abut with the lower edge of the flue of a stove, and the back piece extends above the side pieces of the box, which side pieces are recessed at their rear edges and on their inner sides, as shown at 16, so that the back pieces 14 may fit snugly against them. The side pieces 15 of the box are held together by bolts 17, one of which extends through the side pieces near the frontA portion of the box, and thevother two of which extend across the back side of the back piece 14 and through ears 18, which project from the rear edges ofthe side pieces, asbest shown in Fig. 4.

On the lower front side of the back piece 14 is produced a supporting-bar 19, having notches therein, which are adapted to receive the rear lower ends of the grate-bars 21, and these bars are curved upward and at their front ends they terminate in lugs 22, which are adapted to rest in the notches 23 of the front supporting-bar 24, which bar has lugs 25 at its ends, and the lugs are adapted to rest in the recesses 26, which are produced at the upper front corners of the side pieces 15.

The front supporting-bar 24 and the ends of the grate-bars 21 are covered by a cap 26a, which is shaped like an ordinary angle-iron and extends transversely across the 'front upv per corner of the box, the cap being held in place by suitable bolts, as shown in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the box and the grate may be easily taken apart or as easily put together and that if one of the grate-bars or any other portion of the apparatus is broken the broken part may be easily renewed. The box may be made of various sizes and shapes and may be placed in an ordinary fire-place, or it may be placed within a sheet-iron stove, andits shape may be made to conform to the shape of the stove.

It will be noticed that the bolts which hold the parts of the box together are arranged so that they will not be exposed to any great amount of heat, and consequently the box will wear well and will not fall apart.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tire box and grate comprising a box having a back piece with a supporting-bar on its front side, side pieces having their rear ends secured to the back piece, a removable supporting-bar connecting the front portions of the side pieces, and removable gratebars extending between the front and rear supporting-bars, substantially as shown and described.
