DISINFECTAING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,966, dated March 15, 1892.
Applicatlon led July 23, 1891. Serial No. 400,437. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH ANDR, engneer, of Hildesheim, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its Object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical apparatus for disinfecting bedding and other articles; and it consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-r Figure I is a longitudinal section thereof on line A B G H of Fig. II. Fig. II is a crosssection of the same on line C D of Fig. I. Fig. III is a horizontal section on line E F of Fig. I. Fig. IV is a side view f the apparatus, the masonry being removed. Fig. V is a front end View of the boiler.
The apparatus consists ot' a boiler O, which is walled in when set up and the lower part of which serves as a water-chamber-z'-. c., as a steam-generator-while the upper part y is supplied with the articles or materials required to be disinfected, such as bedding, washing, &c. The upper part is closed on both sides by doors turningvon hinges and secured air-tight by means of screws. In this part is arranged a track formed of angle-irons, upon which a carriage c, running on wheels, can be conveniently pushed in and out. To maintain the water at a uniform height, the feed-water is supplied to the lower part through a funnel a, arranged on one side, this water entering first the heater b and then the boiler, wherein it is heated by the liregases which ascend from below and pass along the tubes c on their Way to the flue d and the chimney steam being thus generated at a temperature of about 102O centigrade at the outside.
In the upper part of a flue d in a suitable brick-work or other furnace structure d2 is arranged a damper f, which allows, when opened, the greatest part of the heating-gases to be conveyed to the pipe g, arranged above the tubes c and used for drying purposes, while by opening a small valve h, adapted to the front end of the boiler, fresh air is admitted for cooling and drying purposes. A1- though the construction is such that even after closing the valve t', arranged in the tubular neck on the top of theboiler, the temperature ofthe steam will not exceed about 102o centigrade; yet a safety-valve 7c is arranged, as a further precaution, in the upper wall of the boiler, while the thermometer Z indicates the temperature inside the latter.
This disinfecting process is carried out in the following manner: As soon as the washing, bedding, and other articles, which are either suspended or heaped up in the carriage, have been subjected for a period of from one-quarter to one hour, or thereabout, to a temperature of about 102 centigrade the damper f and the valves h and t' are opened, whereupon the greatest part of the heat passes through the pipe c, while fresh and dry airis admitted.
. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination, with a furnace provided with llues anda boiler composed of an upperreceptacle and a lower waterschamber, of tubes c c and g g in said water-chamber, lying, respectively, below and above the surface of the water therein, and a valve fin one of the furnaceflues, substantially as described. v
2. In a disinfecting apparatus, the combination, with a furnace provided with flues and a boiler composed of an upper receptacle and a lower Water-chamber, of tubes c c and g g in said water-chamber, lying, respectively, below and above the surface of the water therein, a valve f in one of the furnace-lines, and an air-inlet valve for the admission of air into the boiler, substantially as described.
