EDWIN J. KRAETZER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE CONSOLIDATED FASTENER COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
GLovE-FAsTEN ER.
, SPECIFICATION forming part `ofvIiei-.ters Patent No. 470,642, dated March 8, 1892. Application filed April 11J 1890. Serial No. 3471499- (NU 11105813 of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glove-Fasteners, of which the following is a full speciication.
My invention consists of an improved twopart fastener to be used on gloves and other articles of the class wherein two flaps are to be fastened together and readily separated when desired.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l` shows in section the cover or dome of the button-hol'e member. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the dollbly-lianged retaining-piece. Fig. 3 isa sectional view of the complete button-hole member. Fig. 4 is a perspective `vievv of the resilient portion or socket thereof. Fig; 5 shows in elevation a form of stud or button member adapted to engage with the button-hole member, and Fig. Gshows in section the riveting or anvil plate.
The resilient portion of my improved fastener consists of a flanged eyelet E, having the contracted rolled-in mouth f at or near the anged end thereof and having the body or tubular part of the eyelet preferably flaring out or bell-shaped above the rolled-inl neck or of suitable shape to form a wide studreceiving chamber, as shown in Fig. 4. This piece is rendered resilient by means of the slit f passing up from beneath, preferably through the fiange and through a portion of the tubular part of the eyelet. The other pieces composiugthe button-hole member are a doubly-anged retaining-piece C, a-riveting or anvil piece B, and a cover A. The anvilpiece B, when in place, rests on the outer flange c of the retaining-piece O, with the clinching-surface b downward. The parts B and C are held in this position within the cover A by turning in the tubular portion 0. of said cover around the outer rounded liange c' of the retaining-piece. The three parts A, B, and O thus held together are placed on the upper surface of the material over a hole made therein and the flaring tubular portion of the resilient eyelet F is passed up from beneath through the said hole. The 5o parts being then subjected to pressure between suitably-shaped dies the upper edge f2 of the tubular eyelet,`comingin contact with the inclined anvil-surface b, is bent outward and clinched over the top of the inner flange c of rthe retaining-piece O, the material being pinched between the bottom of the said retaining-piece and the flange of the resilient eyelet F, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The button-hole member thus constructed is secured 6o in the manner described tothe top flap ofthe glove or other article, while on the under flap thereof is mounted a suitable button member having a stud D provided with va contracted neck cl. When the t-wo members are sprung together, the head of the stud D is contained Within the Wide tubular portion of the resilient eyelet E, the mouth f of which clasps the neck of the stud, the socket or eyelet being rendered resilient so as to pass easily on and 7o off the expanded head of. the stud by reason of the slit f, as already described. The central portion b of the anvil-piece is rounded up in such a manner as not to interfere with the head of the stud when in place in the socket.
' I claimv In the button-hole member of a fastener, a anged socket-forming and stud-embracing eyelet slit up=from beneath, having a-rolledin contracted mouth at the flanged end and a 8o wider stud-receiving tubular portion, in combination with acover A, an anvil-piece B, and a doubly-flanged retaining-piece O, the upper portion of the eyelet being rolled outwardly over the inner iange c of the retaining-piece during the process of clinohing and held between said anvil-piece and retainingpiece, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
