Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN NAGELE, OF CLARENDON, ARKANSAS, ASSIGN'OR OF ONE-HALF TO MIDDLETON JESSE MANNING, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,362, dated March 8, 1892.`
Application tiled February 24, 1891. Serial No. 382,569. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN NAGELE, of the city of Clarendon, Monroe county, in the State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Wheel Guards, of which the-following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. Y
My invention relates to improvements in car-wheel guards; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side eleva` tion of my invention as applied to the brakebeam of a car, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the guard itself. y
The object of my invention is to construct a device to be secured `to a car located in front of the wheels and movable therewith to knock off any obstacle which may perchance get on the track, such as stones, human beings, animals, dac.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the brake-beam, to which my invention is preferably secured. However, it maybe applied to other parts of the car if there exists no brake-A beam.
2 indicates the guard itself, there being one secured in front of each forward wheel as the car moves. Said guard 2 consists of a curved shank 3, which terminates at one end with an enlargement 4, which enlarged portion is provided with perforations, through which bolts or screws may be passed, by which the same is secured to the brake-beam or any other part of the car, as desired, and the other end of said shank terminates in a spade-like portion 6, which portion is circular in form and upturned at its terminal portion, thereby presenting ablunt projection. Said portion 6 is provided with a deep slot 7, which groove is preferably of the width of au ordinary carrail. Said guard when secured to the car slants downward with an incline and forms about a right angle with the rail.
The device when secured to the car normally comes almost in contact with the upper surface of the rail and moves along in front of the wheels, and said device is likewise situated at an angle laterally with the rail, so
`as to throw the obstacles which may be on the rail outwardly.
The slot formed in the device is necessary in ease the rail should be broken and the end thereof project above the other rails. In such a case the fractured rail will pass within the slot and not come in contact with the guard and dislocate the same.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is-' The combination, with a movable wheeled frame, of a guard for the wheels thereof, the said guard consisting of a single piece of metal bent backward below its point of attachment to the frame and then forward above the level of the rails, the said horizontal portion and the lower part of the rearwardly-extending portion being slotted above the line of the rails, whereby the passage of the end of a broken rail is permitted, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my si gnature in presence oftwo witnesses.
JOHN NAGELE.
