CONVERTIBLE COUCH.

I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,251, dated March 8, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JENNIE M. MORRISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Couches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention has for its object to provide an article of furniture having the normal appearance of a stool or ottoman, but which in cording to my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken on line 1 1 of the preceding figure; Fig. 3, a transverse section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a similar view on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the legs, andBthe top, of a stool that constitutes one section of my couch. Hinged to one end of the stool-top B is a leaf 0 of corresponding length and width, the free end of this leaf being provided with a folding support D, as best illustrated in Figs 2 and 3.

That end of the stool-top B farthest from the meeting edge of the leaf 0 is cut away in the center to form a curved recess 1), that is guarded by a strip 0 of stiff leather or other suitable material tacked or otherwise rigidly secured to said end of the stool-top, and the upper side of this stool-top is preferably hollowed out adjacent to the recess, in order to form an inclined concavity d, that conforms to the body of the person using the couch. Depending from the stool-top B, adjacent to the recessh therein,is a spout E, of rubber or other suitable material, and supported in guides e, that also depend from the under side of said stool-top, are sliding rods F, provided at their outer ends with stirrups f, these sliding rods being secured in their adjusted position by means of set-screws g, having their bearings in certain of said eyes, as best illustrated in Fig. 4. The leaf O is preferably provided with a recess h, designed to receive the support D, this recess being of such depth that said support and leaf are flush when the latter is swung on its hinges to lie on top of the stool above described. The leaf and its support being folded on the stool and the stirrup-rods run in, the device above described takes up but little room and at the same time serves as a convenient article of furniture, such as a seat or stand. If found desirable, a cushion provided with a curtain may be employed to cover the whole device when folded up, and thus it will be given the appearance of an ottoman. The leaf C be ing positioned, as shown in Figs. land 2, and the stirrup-rods F adjusted, the person to receive an injection reclines on the couch thus formed, with the feet in the stirrups f, the head and shoulders being rested on said leaf. The waste fluid from the injection drains off through the spout E into a vessel previously positioned, and thus the soiling of carpets or floors is avoided.

A device constructed as above described can be placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost and will be found of material convenience to persons requiring frequent injections, as such persons can get themselves into the best possible position to obtain benefit from the treatment, and there is no inconvenience in the matter of the disposition of the waste fluid.

When not in its special use, the identity of the device may be readily concealed, as above described, and said device employed as a useful article of furniture in any apartment of a house.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A stool having one end of its top recessed and provided with a depending spout, a folding leaf connected to the other end of the stool-top, a support for the leaf, and stirrups adjustable on said stool, substantially as set forth.

2. A stool having one end of its top recessed and provided with a guard-strip, adepending spout adjacent to the recess in the stool-top, a folding leaf connected to the other end of the stool-top, and stirrups adjustable on said stool, substantially as set forth.

A stool having a gradually-deepening concavity in the upper side of its top and recessed at one end of this top, a depending spout adjacent to the recess in the stool-top, a folding leaf connected to the other end of said top, a support for the leaf, and stirrups adjustable on the stool, substantially as set forth.

4. A stool having a gradually-deepening concavity in the upper side of its top and recessed at one end of this top, a guard-strip for the recess, a depending spout adjacent to said recess, a folding leaf connected to the other end of said top, a support for the leaf, and stirrups adjustable on the stool, substantially as set forth.
