No. 470,210. Paten ted Mar. 8, 1892.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN I-IOSKING PETT, OF REDRUTH, ENGLAND.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,210, dated March 8, 1892.
' Application filed July 14, 1891. $erial No. 399,475. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HOSKING PETT, engineer, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Redruth, Cornwall, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chorus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionJ.
My invention relates to churns; and it has for its objects to provide a churn which is simple in construction and adapted to quickly produce butter; and with these objects in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved churn. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan, and Fig. at a horizontal section on lineococ of Fig. 2. a is a tub supported by a stand I) of wood or other suitable material. The tub a is furn shed with sockets 0, into which are secured by means of screws the vertical ends of a rectangular frame (Lextending over and across the said tub, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. To this frame is rotatably secured in a boss formed thereon the upper end of a vertical shaft 6, furnished with a curved bladef and carrying a horizontal bevel-wheel g, gearing with a similar vertical wheel h, which is mounted on a horizontal shaft a, passing through another boss formed in one of the vertical sides of the frame aforesaid and carrying at its outer end a fly-wheelj, furnished with a handle k, the inner end of this shaft being supported bya hangingbearing l, bolted to the frame (1. Upon thevertical shaft are mounted four arms m m m m of various lengths, as clearly shown in Fig. To the arms m m m are screwed three propellers or dashers n a n preferably of stoneware, extending nearly to the bottom of the tub or vat a. The arm m is provided with a blade 0, curved in the manner shown in Fig. 4 and revolving against the side of the said tub or vat. As the wheel j is turned by means of the handle the bevel-wheel h is set in motion and with it the Wheel 9, imparting a ro tary motion to the shaft e, the blade f, the propellers 'n a m and the blade 0, which churn the milk previously placed in the tub c.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In a churn, the combination, with the receptacle thereof, of a rotatable shaft provided with a vertical blade, a series of horizontallyarranged arms secured to said shaft and having varying lengths, propellers or dashers carried by said arms, a curved blade carried by one of the arms and adjacent to the side ried by said arms, a blade 0, carried by one,
of said arms and adjacent to the side of the receptacle, a bevel-wheel secured to said shaft, a second shaft rotatably mounted in the supporting-bar and provided with a bevel-wheel gearing with the other bevel-wheel, and an operating-wheel carried by said second shaft, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a churn, the combination, with the receptacle thereof, of a supporting-bar (I, removably secured thereto, a shaft e, rotatably mounted in said bar, a blade f, secured to said shaft, a series of horizontally-arranged arms on m m m having different lengths, secured to said shaft and provided with the propellers or dashers and the curved blade 0, a bevel-wheel carried by the shaft, a second shaft 2', rotatably'mounted in the bar (l, and a hanger l, depending from the latter and carrying a bevel-wheel gearing with the other bevel-wheel, and an operating-wheel carried by said second shaft, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
