UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE IV. DELBRIDGE, OF OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI.
WlR'E-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,106, dated March 1, 1892. Application filed July 2, 1891. Serial No. 398,240. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. DELBRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 0X- ford, in the county, of Lafayette and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVire-Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention pertains to the constructlon and arrangement of parts necessary to produce an effective tool for stretching wire, my object being to produce a device of cheap and simple construction, such as can be produced by almost any person desiring to use such a tool.
Briefly stated, my invention consists in providing a forked lever provided with lateral projections at points near the junction of the forked arms for the purposes that will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention applied to use in constructing a wire fence. Fig.2 shows how it may be used in forming a splice or connection between the ends of a broken wire. Referring to the several parts by their respective letters of designation, A comprlses the body of the lever, which terminates 1n the bifurcated end forming the arms B. A short distance from the point of junction of said arms I provide the diametric holes 0, arranged transversely to each other, in which I secure the fixed bars D D, when the tool is complete and ready for use. \Vhen itis desired to tighten the wire forming a strand of a fence, said wire is placed between the bifurcated ends of the lever and wrapped once or twice around one or both of the bars, when the ends of the arms are placed against the post forming the fulcrum, and the other end of the lever is brought around in the direction in which it is desired to stretch the wire, and when drawn to a'proper degree of tightness said wire may be secured and disposed of in the usual or any preferred way.
Another method of using the stretcher is to place the bifurcated ends of the lever against the post upon that side thereof toward which the wire is being drawn, when the wire is wound upon the lever by turning the same by means of the fixed bars D D, as will be readily understood. After securing the wire to the post the free end thereof may be unwound from the end of the bars or the lever, when the nextwire maybe tightened in the same manner, or the first wire may be stretched at the next post, and the operation repeated indefinitely. \Vhen it is desired to splice or secure the ends of a broken wire, I prefer to use the clamps E E, one of which being secured to each end of the wire and said clamps being connected by another wire the stretcher may be placed over said wire in such a manner that the arms will be on opposite sides thereof, when by rotating the lever by means of the bars D D the slack in the Wire connecting the two clamps can be readily and effectively taken up, wire will be brought sufiiciently together to enable them to be spliced or secured.
Believing that the advantages, construction, and operation of my improved wirestretcher will be readily understood and that its effectiveness and simplicity will be appreciated, further description is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe combination, with the lever having the bifurcated end B and the diametrical holes 0, arranged transversely to each. other, of the fixed bars D, seated in said holes, and the clamps E, connected by a rope or other flexible connection passing into the bifurcated end of the lever, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
