SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,016, dated March. 1, 1892.

Be it known that I, JAooB'R. SCOTT, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skiving-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in skiving-machines, as pointed out in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a transverse vertical section in the plane :c oc, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 isa transverse vertical seotion in the plane y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a face view of the roller-die detached,showingthe end gage and the edge gage in position for feeding in the blank. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal section of the roller-die. Fig. G is a face view of one of the sections of the feedroller, having teeth extending partially round the circumference.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the frame which forms the bearings for the shaft B, on which is mounted the roller-die C, said shaft being provided with a key a, which engages a seat b in the roller-die, so that said roller-die can be readily removed and replaced by another, as may be desired. The shaft B is geared by cog-wheels c CZ with a shaft D, on which is mounted the feed-roller E. The shaft D has its bearings in hangers E F, which are keyed to a rod G, mounted loosely in the standards Ao Ao of the frame A, and one of the hangers F is exposed to the the action of a spring e, which has a tendency to force the feed-roller up toward the rollerdie. A set-screw f serves to regulate the position of the feed-roller in regard to the rollerdie. The feed-roller is made in the form of a truncated cone, and in order to bring its face in the proper relation toward the rollerdie the shaft D is placed in an oblique posiv tion, as shown in Fig. 2.
H is the knife, which is situated in a plane slightly below the lowest portion of the rollerdie. It is secured to a plate I, which swings on a pin g and can be adjusted up or down by means of set-screws h, so that the cuttingedge of the knife can be readily brought into the required position toward the roller-die. This roller-die is provided with a die i, corresponding to the article to be skived, and it carries the end gage J, which is fitted into a cavity j, Fig. l, and from which projects a stud k into a cam-groove Z, formed in the outer surface of the edge gage K. (Best seen in Fig. 3.) This edge gage is firmly secured to the frame A by screws m m, Fig. 2, which pass through slots in the shank n, which extends from the edge gage, so that said edge gage' can be adjusted toward and from the rollerdie. The cam-groove Z is formed in such a manner that the end gage J is caused to project beyond the circumference of the rollerdie during a certain portion of the revolution of the same, so that the operative can adjust the blank over the die 1I with its end against the end gage and its edge against the edge gage, and when the roller-die has reached the position shown in Fig. 1 the end gage is drawn inward, while at the same time the blank is grasped by the feed-roller and carried against the edge of the knife. By the action of the knife the blank is split, and an article such as a counter-stiffener can be produced. It has heretofore been remarked that the feedroller is conical, so that the inner edge of the blank is fed forward a little faster than the outer edge, and consequently the blank is caused to swing round during the operation of cutting, its inner edge being retained in contact with the edge gage, so that said inner edge is curved, as is required in forming such articles, for instance, as counter-stii'eners.
In the example shown in the drawings, the feed-roller E is made in a number of sections l 2 3 4 5 6, and the outer sections l and 6 are provided with teeth extending all around, while the intermediate sections 2, 3, 4., and 5 are provided with teeth only throughout a certain portion of their circumference. (See Figs. 2 and 6.) Those portions of the blank which are acted upon by the teeth of the feedroller sink into said teeth, while those portions of the blank which are acted upon by the plain untoothed sections of the feed-roller are not permitted to sink down, and consequently a larger portion of the blank is split off by the knife at those portions which sink into the teeth of the feed-roller than at those IOO portions which are supported by the plain sections of the feed-rollerand the desired fullness or thickness of certain portions of the counter-stiifener or similar article is preserved, while other portions are reduced to a smaller thickness. The shaft B is geared with the belt-pulley P, mounted on a shaft which has its bearing in the frame A.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a skiving-machine, the combination, with the rolleldic, the feed-roller, mechanism for imparting motion to the roller-die and the feed-roller, and the knife, of an edge gage secured to the frame of the machine and an end gage carried by the roller-die and engaging a cam for moving it outward to its active position or inward, so as to clear the knife, substantially as described.
2. In a skiving-machine, the combination, With the roller-die, the knife, and the end gage, of a conical feedroller and mechanism for imparting motion to the roller-die and the feed-roller, substantially as described.
3. In a skiving-machine, the combination, with the roller-die and the knife, of a feedroller composed of sections provided with teeth extending all around and of sections having teeth only partially around their circumference, substantially as described.
e. In a skiving-machine, the combination, with the roller-die, the feed-roller, and mechanism for imparting motion to these rollers, of a plate I, mounted on a pin g, set-screws h 71, for adjusting` this plate, and a knife H, secured to said plate, substantially as described.
