UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. FIFIELD, OF NORTH BBOOKFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COUNTER AND WELT SKIVING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,598. dated April 4, 1876; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN W. FIFIELD, of North Brookeld, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Counter-Skiver and Welt-Machine, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to the skiving or paring the edge of the leather down to a thin or knife edge, and also, by adjusting one knife, to make the same machine operate as a weltmachine, cutting and skiving two at a time.
lts nature is shown in .the accompanying drawings and descriptionV of'a machine embodying my invention. l
In said drawings, Figurel is a front view -or elevation, and Fig. 2 is a side View from the left of Fig. l, the. same parts being indicated bythe same letters of reference in each.
A is Va feed-wheel, pivoted on a suitable frame, which also supports the adjustable knife H, in the usual way. B is a bearinglever, hung at one end, and'having a small roll, F, near the other, projecting slightly, so as to bear on the leather on the wheel A', and an adjustable face-plate. G, to rest on the sur`- face ot' the leather sufficiently to hold it in place for the knife H, the spring D operating through the saddle E, insuring a proper hearing. Back'of B is a similar piece, C, Without thev roll or faceplate, and is made thinner than B, designed to insure the edge ofthe leather being held close to the wheel A in front of the knife H, and for that purpose is capable of motion from the same spring D, independent of B, this being accomplished by the saddle E between the spring Dand the bearers. These pieces B and C act together March 3, 1876.
.leather is passed through, the knife I cuts oi' a strip the right Width, and the knife H splits and skives the two welts at once into theusual form. The wheel A may bej driven by any suitable means. A circular knife may be used in the place of the knife Las shown in broken lines.
. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a counter-skiviug machine, the combination ot' a double bearer, BO, adapted to operate separately or jointly, with the spring D and saddle E, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In combination, the roll F, bearer B, and I spring D, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination, the adjustable plate G, bearer B, spring' D, and wheel A, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In combination, the knives I and H, bearer B, and wheel A, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
