SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,011, dated March 1, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY PITT ROBERTS, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in inhalers.
The object of the invention is to provide certain improvementsin construction and detail parts whereby a highly-efficient inhaler is provided.
This object is accomplished by and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations of parts -more fully described hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows myinvention in use. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 is a view showing the inhaler provided with attaching means to pass over the ears. Fig. 5 is a view showing the spring device to engage the nose somewhat different in construction from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawings, reference-letter a indicates a small box composed of light material. The interior of the box is divided longitudinally or otherwise into two compartments'or chambers by means of a curved deflector or partition I). The outer medicinal chamber or, compartment 0 contains the medicinal material, which is preferably carried by a piece of heavy blotting-paper or other absorbent material d, which is saturated with the medi cine; or the medicinal material may be placed in this chamberin any suitable manner. The upper end of this chamber is provided with one or more suitable inlets e from the outer air. The deflector 1) curves downwardly and horizontally within the box toward the rear side thereof, so as to leave a narrow passage f from the bottom of the medicinal chamber into the lower portion of the air-chamber g. The outer side of the air-chamber g is provided with the two tapered open nozzles h, constructed and arranged to fit into the nostrils of the person. The top of the box is closed by a movable cover 1'. which forms a valve. This cover preferably consists of a metal plate hinged at its rear edge to the rear edge of the box, so as to cover the air-chamber and medicine-chamber and provided with a suitable light spring j to normally hold it closed and so that the outer edge of the lid lifts when raised. It will thus be seen that when the two nozzles are inserted in the nostrils the air drawn in will pass in through inlets c and through the medicinal chamber, carrying with it the medicinal properties of the material and out through passage f under deflector b into the air-chamber g and from thence through the nozzles h into the nostrils, the medicinal properties carried with the air from the medicinal chamber passing into direct contact with the passages of the head and throat and lungs and exerta healing influence thereon. When the breath is exhaled, it passes through the nozzles h against the upwardly-curved deflector above the opening f and is directed against valve 2', the outer end of which lifts, thereby allowing the breath to pass out of the box directed away from the face without passing through the medicinal chamber.
The wire hooks k (shown in Fig. 4) hold the improved inhaler in position by passing over the ears; but of course it is known that such holding devices have been used before.
Fig. 6 illustrates a holding device consisting of a single piece of wire so bent as to grasp the opposite sides of thenose just above the alze thereof and thereby firmly hold the article in position. sists of a single piece of wire bent straight at the center and passed through the sides of the box and at its ends on opposite sides of the box bent into loops Z, swung up over the top of the box when it is desired to place the article on the nose, and after the nozzles have been inserted in the nostrils said loops are swung down and their outer curved ends engage opposite sides of the nose just above the alze thereof and press the same inwardly against the ends of the nozzles, thereby firmly holding the article in place.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the center of the spring- This spring-holder conwire is bent, as shown in Fig. 1, and the straight sides are secured to the outer sides of the box by eyes '12 preferably formed by slits cut in the rear side of the box, making tongues which are bent around the straight portions of the wire. The wire extends up over the box, and the sides thereof are curved in toward each other and are bent downwardly at their outer ends, as shown, so that said curved outer ends 0 press in against opposite sides of the nose, as shown.
Of course any suitable attaching means can be employed with my improved inhaler, and I do not herein broadly claim spring-attaching wires to engage the nose or ears.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An inhaler consisting of the box provided with securing means, the two nozzles from the box, air-inlets into the box, the open top, the outwardly-opening cover normally closing the same, and the inclined deflector within the box, leaving a passage from the air inlets to the nozzles and located between the same, so as to deflect air passing in through the nozzles upwardly against said cover, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The inhaler consisting of a box to contain medicinal material,having the inlets and the outlet normally closed by a swinging cover, two nozzles to extend into the nostrils, and the spring-wire loosely joined to the box and having the two inwardlyspringing looped ends at opposite ends of the box and extending beyond said nozzles so as to engage the opposite sides of the nose and press the same in against the ends of the nozzles, as set forth.
