J.. WRIGHT. MATCH BOARD.
No. 469,879. Patented Mar. 1 1892".
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN \VRIGHT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
MATCH-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,879, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed April 19, 1890.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boards, of which the following, with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pat-tern or match boards. i
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a combined sprue and arch gates radiating therefrom in pairs, whereby the molder is enabled to so mold and gate his patterns that in casting they may be poured from a sprue common to one or more pairs of said patterns or gates and whereby the said sprue and gates may be simultaneously withdrawn from the flask before such flask is separated for the purpose of removing the patterns, and in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l is a plan of the cope side of my improved board, showing the sprue and gates in position preparatory to ramming, and whereon there are arranged four patterns adapted to be poured from a sprue common to the four radiating gates. Fig. 2 is a central cross-section on the line 50 '00 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is a vertical section on the line .2 .2, Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a modification of the construction and arrangement shown in Fig. 1, and it illustrates the manner of gating patterns in single pairs with a sprue common to the pair of gates employed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, like letters refer to like parts in the various figures.
A represents a suitable board provided upon one face with the face-plates B, each of which is provided with the usual pit or well 0. Upon: the opposite or cope side of the board are rigidly secured the patterns D, equal in number to the face-plates, and they are each provided with a core pit or well E.
In the center of the board, upon the cope side, is formed a recess to receive a plate F,
Serial No. 348,663. (No model.)
the outer face of which is provided with an annular fillet G.
H represents the sprue, and to this sprue are rigidly secured the radiating arch gates I, equal in number to the number of patterns upon the board. The lower end of the sprue when in place preparatory to ramming is received within the annular fillet G, and the toes of the gates I are designed to rest upon the tops of the pits E, each of which is provided with a fillet a and-within which the toes of the gates rest. Projecting from the drag side of the board and secured thereto is a hemispherical boss .I, the center of which is in alignment with the longitudinal center of the sprue H.
In practice I ram up the cope and drag sides of the flask as in the ordinary manner. After ramming the cope I draw out the sprue and its attached gates, then separate the flask, remove the patterns and board, and again put the flask together, and all is ready for pouring. To the practical operator it will readily be observed that the boss J forms a well, into which the molten metal is first poured and from which it flows up through the gates to the various patters within the flask, and it will be found that metal can be poured directly it comes from the cupola Without waiting for it to partially cool or come to an imaginary temperature. The employment of the fillets obviates the necessity of fingertrimming or blowing the mold after the patterns have been removed.
The construction above described is especially designed for use in molding heavy or thick stove covers or plates; but in molding for ordinary work the patterns 13, plate F, boss I, and the fillets G and a may be omitted in whole or in part, as may be desired, at the option of the molder.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the sprue H is provided with but two arch gates located diametrically opposite each other. In the use of this gate in molding a flask of fours it will be necessary to employ two sets of sprues and gates gating to the bottom of the pits of the patterns in parallel lines instead of upon lines radiating from a common center, as in the construction first described, and
while this would necessarily increase the labor in molding and pouring still it would be purely within the spirit of my invention, which consists, primarily, in gating to the patterns in pairs with a double arch gate pouring from a sprne common to one or more pairs of such patterns or gates.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A pattern or match board provided with a series of face-plates and patterns in pairs, in combination with a central sprite provided with a series of arch gates, said sprue and gates being adapted to be drawn before separating the cope and drag, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a pattern or match board provided with face-plates and patterns. in pairs, a series of. gates gating to and with a central sprue, and a boss projecting from the drag side of the pattern-board, said boss being in alignment with the longitudinal center manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses, this 16th day of April, 1890.
JOHN WRIGHT.
