HARVEY V. DEMAREST, OF NYAOK, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK DE BAUN, OF SAME PLACE.
SH UTTER-BOWER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,834, dated March 1, 1892.
Application filed December 17l 1891. Serial No. 415,414. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY V. DEMAREsr,
a citizen of the United States, residing at` Nyack, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Blind-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to blind fasteners or bowers; and the objects in view are to provide a cheap and simple device for maintaining outside blinds or shutters in any position, either closed, open, or partially so, and to so construct the device as to render the locking of the blind when released automatic.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in thefollowing description, and the novelfeatures thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings,Figure l-is a perspective of a portion of a window frame and blind, together with a fastener, constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. v2 is Aa plan of a portion of the sill, the blind, and the fasteningdevice. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the fastening-stud. Fig. 4 is a similar View of theinner portion of the curved locking-bar.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the window-casing, to which is hinged, as at 2, an ordinary blind or shutter 3. A bracket 4 is secured to the inner face of the blind or shutter, and pivoted thereto, as at 5, is the outer end of a link 6, the free end of which is pivoted, as at 7, to a curved arm 8, the outer or free end of which is upwardly and outwardly curved to form a tail or handle 9, and in front of the same the arm 8 is spread and provided with a polygonal opening 10.
The fastening device itself consists of a securing-plate 11, provided with screw-receiving openings 12, through which screws 13 are passed and by means of which the device is secured to the sill 1 of the window-frame. From the securing-plate rises a slightly-tapered polygonal locking or fastening stud 14, which agrees in cross-section with and at its upper end is slightly smaller than the opening 10 of the arm.
In operation the tail or handle 9 of the arm Sis raised so as to disengage the opening 10 of the arm from the stud, and by manipulating the arm it will be evident that the blind may be swung to a closed or open position or to any intermediate position, and by dropping the opening 10 over the stud 14 the arm becomes locked upon the stud against accidental closing or opening, and is thus held.
Ifdesired, this device may be employed as a lock for the blinds when closed, as well as when open or at any of their intermediate positions. The taper preferably given to the stud 14 serves to facilitate the removal of the arm from th'e stud when it is desired to manipulate the blind, and also to return or settle the perforation 10 of the arm properly upon the stud when the blind has been manipulated and the arm released. It will be obvious that in this manner-that is, the polygonal perforation aligning or coinciding with the stud will constitute a secure fastening in that the arm will be prevented from any turning when placed in position.
It will be seen that the device is of great simplicity and durability and may be readily attached to any window-sill and outside blind or shutter.
Having described my invention, what I Aclaim is- 1. The herein-described window-fastener, the same consisting of an arm adapted to be connected to a shutter and provided at its opposite or free end with an angular perforation, and alocking-stud adapted to be secured to a window-sill, having its body angular in cross-section and adapted to receive said perforation, substantially as specified.
2. The'combination, with the window-sill and the hinged shutter, of the bracket 4, secured to the face of the shutter, the link 6, pivoted to the bracket, the curved arm 8,piv oted to the free end of the link, provided near its rear end with a polygonal perforation and beyond the same curved in shape to form a handle, and the metal stud polygonal in crosssection, adapted to conform to and receive the perforation of the arm and mounted upon a perforated'metal base, whereby it is adapted to be secured to the sill of awindow, substantially as specified.
3. The herein-described shutter-fastener,
IOC
the same consistingof the arm provided atits In testimony that I claim the foregoing as rear end with a. rhandle and in front of the my `own Ifhawe'ahereto aixed mysignaturein 1o same with an angular opening, a, tapered anthe presence of twowitnesses. gular stud adapted to be secured t0 the win- 5 dow-si11 and to receive the opening in the arm, HARVEY V' DEMARESL and a, link loosely pivoted to the outer end of Witnesses: the arm and adapted to 13e-secured -to 'aV shut- JOHN A. SINGER, ter, substantially as specified. CHARLES R. DEMAREST.
