To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWIN LEVI BADGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Sash- Holder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sash-holders; and it has for its object to provide an improved holder that can be readily attached to the sashes and window-frames of ordinary windows, and one which will provide for a sure and certain holding of the sash at any point desired, and will also act in the capacity of a secure sash-fastener, which will effectually prevent the sash from being either raised or lowered, as the case may be, and which will allow the sashes to 'be only moved or controlled by the hand.

With these and many other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is fully understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window provided with a sash-holder and fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view'through the catch and rod. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in perspective of the catch. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the pivotplate.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary windowframe, within which are located and worked the upper and .lower sashes B of the ordinary construction and usual type. When the hereindescribed catch is secured to the lower sash and is connected therewith, as is the preferable use of the holder, a pivot-plate G is secured to the sash-rail adjacent to the side of the window-frame. Said pivot-plate is provided with a transverse oblong slot or perforation c, that is adapted to receive the oblong or elongated stud or pivot-pin D, secu red upon the inner end or arm of the rectangular casting E,and said stud or pivot-pin is disposed at direct right angles with said opening a when inserted therein, and thus provides for a free up-and-down movement of said casting, while at the same time securely holding the same to said plate and the sash-rail. The said rectangular casting E is provided with a rectangular opening F therein, extending the full length of the casting. A double dog or pawl G is pivoted within the opening through said casting upon the pin g, and, extending above and below said casting, is provided with the opposite engaging-points 9, that always be in the same plane with each other, whether the pivoted rectangular frame or casting is swung above or below the same, as the sash may either be raised or lowered.

A stationary locking-rod H is secured in the brackets h, fastened to the side of the windowframe and ofistanding therefrom a suitable distance, so that the catches may readily engage the same. The said rod may be either notched, milled, or smooth, according to the option of the manufacturer,but is preferably provided near its extreme lower end with a series of ratchet-teeth h, that are adapted to engage the uppermost point of said double dog, and thus form a complete sash-fastener, which effectually prevents the lower sash from being raised. The said rod extends through the rectangular frame or casting between the outer end of the same and the opposite points of the double pawl pivoted therein. Thus it can be readily seen that as the sash is raised the rectangular casting pivoted thereto drops upon the rod below its point of pivot to said sash-rail, and thus the upward pressure of the sash rising will cause said casting to act as a lever, its point of fulcrum being the end of the opening through said casting which engages behind said rod, and thus causes both points of the dog to be thrown tightly against the front of the rod and thus lock the sash, which can be only raised by raising the. pivoted catch with the sash. The tendency of the sash to fall is prevented by a reversal of the position of the pivoted catch. By holding the catch and allowing the sash to fall will thus cause the said casting to engage the rod above its point of pivot, and the weight of the sash will cause the same leverage to be exerted to throw the double dog or pawl into impingement with the stationary rod, extending the full length of the window. \Vhen the said catch is used upon the upper sash, the same is pivoted to a suitable bracket I, secured to the sash-rail, and engages the said rod at right angles to the catch upon the lower sash, and

is preferably normally held into engagement by the upwardly-pressing spring J bearing thereagainst and forcing the catch upwardly, the operation of the upper catch of course being identical with that of the lower, as will be readily apparent.

This device is applicable to single or double windows, or can be used on the lower sash [0 alone, as the wishes ofthe customer may dietate.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a sash-holder, the combination, with the window sashes and frame, of an offstanding rod secured to and parallel with one side of said frame, and a catch pivotally secured to the sash-rail adjacent to said rod, and comprising an open rectangular frame orcasting embracing said rod and a pawl ivoted within said casting directly in front 0 'said rod, substantially as set forth.

2. In a sash-holder, the combination, with -the Window sashes and frame, of an offstanding rod secured to and parallel with one side of said frame, and a catch pivotally secured to the sash-rail adjacent to said rod, and comprising an open rectangular frame or casting 3o embracing said rod and a double pawl pivoted within said casting directly in front of said rod and provided with engaging-points extending upon opposite sides of said casting and always in the same plane with each other, substantially as set forth.

3. In a sash-holder, the combination, with the window frame and sashes, of an oifstanding rod secured to one side of said frame, a pivot-plate secured to the sash-rail adjacent tosaid rod and provided with an oblong perforation, and a catch comprising a frame or casting having an inwardly-projecting headed stud or pin engaging the opening in said plate, an elongated rectangular opening within said casting and embracing said rod, and a double pawl pivoted within said rectangular opening directly in front of said rod and provided with opposite outwardly-curved engagingpoints extending upon opposite sides of said casting in a line with each other and adapted to be impinged against said rod by the leverage of said casting or frame, substantially as set forth.
