WIRE STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 469,369, dated February 23, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID L. OLINE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention has relation to a combined wire stretcher and splicer; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more'fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invention is to provide for the expeditious and effective stretching of the stringers of wire fences; also, for the splicing of the same in case of breakage.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a wire fence with my device applied thereto in the act of stretching a wire stringer. Fig. 2 is a View showing my invention applied as a splicer. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of my invention.

In the embodiment of my invention I employ a lever 1, having one end pointed, as at 1, to adapt it to secure a hold, for instance, upon a post, and having near said end a curved offset or bend 2 to provide for allowing the lever the required sweep from a vertical to a horizontal position in effecting the stretching of the wire, as presently seen, and yet enable the holding of the wire at the required point of fastening along the post by the lever. Upon one side of the offset 2 is secured a double-ended cleat or catch 3, each end standing outward therefrom, as at 4, to permit the passage or reception of a wire between each outstanding end of said cleat or catch and the lever.

6 designates a supplemental lever fulcrumed upon the main lever 1 at 7 and adapted to presentits inner beveled end 8 to engage the wire or stringer passed between one end I of the cleat or catch 3 and the main lever, the wire resting inthe recess at said end of the cleat or catch.

To stretch a stringer or wire 9 (reference being had to Fig. 1) after suitably securing one end to one corner-post, said wire is extended to the opposite end post or .at a distance-say a quarter of a mile or less-from said corner-post and then grasped between one end of the cleat or catch 3 and the supplemental lever 6. Now by engaging the pointed end 1' of the lever 1,with the latter post as a fulcrum therefor, and pressing downward upon the lever 1, it is obvious that the wire will be tightened or stretched, it (the wire) while thus being held being fastened to said latter post, preferably by driving into the post over the wire a staple 11, the stretcher now being disconnected from the wire.

To splice two wires or stringers, (reference being had to Fig. 2,) the broken ends thereof are passed under the outstanding ends 4 of the cleat or catch 3, respectively, and the lever 1 given a turn to the right, bringing the ends of the stringers or wires together, and then by giving the lever 1 additional turns the required twist or splicing of the wire is effected.

I do not desire to confine myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, as many minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combined wire stretcher and splicer having the curved or arcuate double-ended cleat or catch beveled or offset at its ends and the supplemental lever adapted with said curved or arcuate cleat to grasp the wire for stretching, substantially as set forth.

2. The combined wire stretcher and splicer having the curved or arcuate offset portion near its pointed end, the correspondinglyshaped double-ended cleat or catch beveled or offset at its ends, and the supplemental lever fulcrumed on the aforesaid lever contiguous to one end of said cleat or catch, substantially as set forth.
