G. B. PROCHASKA.
SPARK ARRESTER.
Patented Feb.,23 1892.
' aside elevationot' myimproved apparatus deflector-plate B, through the medium of vided adjacent to its junction to the furnace smoke is detained momentarily in the drum GEORGE B. PROCHASKA, OF
"UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE} NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,271, dated 7 Application filed February 24, 1891. Serial No. 382,513. (No model.)
To all whom it may ccncern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BOUTCHER PROCHASKA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Smoke-Consumer and Dust and Soot Collector; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for depleting smoke of soot and other particles of combustion, whereby it is discharged'in a gaseous or vapor state; and it consists in the construction, novel combination, and adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim annexed.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is complete.
Referring by letter to the said drawing, E designates a furnace, and A the smoke-pipe thereof, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction. The said fine A is prowith a breeching O of the ordinary construction; but this breeching may be dispensed with, if desired, and the main pipe run into the furnace.
Within the drum B, which encircles the pipe A above the breeching O and which-is of a diameter greater than the pipe, isarranged a which a portion of the soot from the arising to-allow of the condensing of any steam that might be discharged. 1
The lower portion of the pipe A, as shown in dotted lines at a, extends up into the drum B a sufficient distance to form in conjunction with the wall of the drum a receptacle for the water of condensation, which is drawn off through :3. depending pipe 1), connected with the drum.
At a suitable point in the pipe A above'the closed after the fire is started to send the February 23,1892.
smoke through the filtering apparatus, presently to'be described.
Leading from the smoke-flue A at a point between the drum B and damper M is a flue G, which is provided at a suitable point in its length with a damper N, which is ordinarily closed when the valve M in the pipe is open, and vice versa. This branch flue G leads to a fan-chamber H, within which a suction or draft fan is rotated by any suitable'power, the shaft Q of said fan being provided with a band-pulley, as illustrated.
The fan-wheel within the chamber Il may lie of any ordinary construction capable of creating a strong draft, whereby the smoke is lead down through the pipe G.
Leading fromthe fan-chamber H at a suit-' able point, preferably at the top thereof, as shown, is a flue or pipe K, which leadsinto the upper side of a boiler or water-receptacle F, which may be of any form and size suitable to the requirements placed upon it. This water-receptacle F is preferably placed in a horizontal position, as shown, whereby the smoke and particles of combustion are given a greater sweep over the water contained therein, which is preferably kept at about the proportional height shown.
Leading from the receptacle]? at a distant point from the entrance of the pipe K is a discharge-pipe L, through which the smoke,
gas, or vapor which has been depleted of the particles of combustion passes. This flue or pipe L, which is provided with a gateor damper O, discharges into the'main flue A above the valve M.
The several dampers or valves in the refan-chamber II, thence throughthe pipe K into the water-receptacle, where it passes over the water, thence in its depleted gaseous state into the pipe L, and finally is discharged into the main pipe A above the valve M therein. Having described my invention, what I claim is-.
The combinat ion,wi ill a furnace, ofa smokepipe or uptake in two sections, with a space the said water-receptacle, and a pipe leading between them, a drain surrounding the said therefrom and discharging into the smoke- .pipe and connecting the sections thereof, a pipe "or uptake above the valve therein, all x 5 deflector arranged in said drum, adrain-pipe adapted to operate substantially as and for 5 leading from the bottom of the drum, a the purpose set forth. 7
damper arranged in the smoke-pipe above the In testimony whereof Iaffix mysignature in drum, a. branch pipe leading from the smokepresence of two witnesses. v pipe or uptake at a point beneath the Valve I w 1 therein, a fan-chamber at the opposite end GEORGE PBOCHASKA' 10 of said branch pipe, a fan arranged in said Witnesses:
chamber, a pipe leading rom the fan-cham- O. J. MISCHLER, her and discharging into a water-receptacle, PERCY D. PARKS;
