SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,147, dated February 16, 1892.

Be it known that I, HENRY F. J oNEs, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof Ransom, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth-A ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.

Figure l of the drawings is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view with wheels removed.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in plows;'and it consists in the no vel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter A designates the sulky -frarne supported upon the groundwheels B and comprising the axle holding cross-bars a et and the tongue G, having the forked rear end connected to said bars by clips b b.

D D are axle-arms on which the wheels B are loosely mounted and which are provided at their inner ends with the perforated plate portions d, which are held between the crossare provided in these bars in order that the axle-arm may be adjusted laterally therein to support-the wheels at a greater or less distance from each other.

Secured to the cross-bars ct c, and adjustable both vertically and laterally thereon, are the depending arms E, having at their lower ends bearings c,'in which are loosely hung the arms f of a bail F. Secured to the reartransverse portion of this bail, near each side portion b2, are curved arms g, which are secured to the beam G of the plow G. This plow G comprises the rearwardly-divergin g shares H, united at their forward ends to form the point c and secured to the casting or frame h. These shares are inclined in the manner shown, and have secured thereto a series of rearwardly and upwardly extending fingers 7.2, projecting inwardly from said shares.

K is the standard of the plow, heldv at its lower end in the frame or casting h and at its upper end connected to or curved to form the beam G.

L is an angular rock-shaft transversely supported in bearings depending from the tongue forward of the axle and having at its central portion a forwardly-projecting arm, to which is adjustably and pivotally secured one end of a link or toggle L', the opposite end of which is connected to the beam of the plow. On one end of this shaft is the operating-lever M, having the spring pawl or detent and detent-lever m, arranged to engage the teeth of a segment plate or rack m on the tongue.

By the operation of the lever L the point of extend ed forwardly, as shown at f3, and to thel forward end of this extension is secured one end of a link N, the opposite end of which is secured to the short arm h of a right-angled lever P, pivoted at its angle to allug on the frame. By operating the longer arm p of this lever it will be seen that the bail will be turned in its bearings to raise or lower the entire plow. Said lever is provided with a segment and detent device similar to that described in connection with the lever L. Both said levers are located in a position to be conveniently operated from the seat S, which, as shown, may have a spring-support 'on the frame in the usual manner.

The shares of theplow may be made of any length and breadth desired,and are arranged so as towork their way under cornstalks,dry grass, or other rubbish, which will be carried upon the lingers 7.". to prevent the plow from clogging. It is adapted for all kinds of soil, which it leaves loose and light. It also cuts a very large furrow, as will be seen. By adj usting the axle-arms to bring the wheels at their greatest distance apart two or more of these plows may be arranged side by side on the same frame.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-n l.' The combination, with the frame having the downwardly-dependingz'arms provided with bearings, of the bail having arms loosely mounted in said bearings and arms connected to said bail and secured to the plow-beam, a link connected at one end to said beam and at the other end to a rook-shaft, and a link connectingone arm oft said'bail wi-th'one arm* of an angle-lever, and lever` mechanismforV- operating said link to eieot the adjustment of the plow, substantially. as specified- 3. The combination, with the frame having axlearms'adjustable laterally therein and adjustable depending arms having bearings at their lower portions, of abail having arms loosely'hung in each pair of said arms, aplow slipported from said bail, and connections between'said 'bail andanoperatinglever and between the beam and a second lever for effecting the adjustment of said plow, substantial-lyas specified.
