COMBINED REFRlGERATlNG-COUNTER AND DISPLAY-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,010, dated February 16, 1892.

To a whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, JOHN C. DUHM, a citizen of the United States, and EMIL BLOCK and JOHANN SAUTER, citizens of Germany, all residents of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Refrigerating-Counter and Display-Case, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined refrig crating-counter and display-case designed for use in stores in which cheese, butter, eggs, fancy groceries, and other perishable articles are sold; and ithas for its object to produce a combined refrigerating-coon terand displaycase by means of which articles may be preserved in a cold temperature and be at all times in plain view of the customers and at the same time serve all the purposes of an ordinary counter, whereby much time is saved in displaying and serving the goods to customers and a great econom yin floor-space effected.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and afterward definitely pointed out in the claims, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming'a part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view, lookingfrom the rear, of our combined refrigerating-counter and display-case; and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.

Referring to the drawings, the letter A indicates the refrigerating-counter closed at top, bottom, and sides and designed to be set up in the place of and serve the purpose of an ordinary counter. The said refrigeratingcounter is provided with a central ice-chamber, and at each side of the same with a provision chamber, to which access is had by hinged doors and sliding lids.

The refrigerator may be of any approved construction, as the same forms no part of our invention.

The display-case is of aconsiderably less width than the top of a counter, thus affording room upon said counter for the different operations necessary in serving customers with the goods displayed in the case. The top of the counter is provided with a series of openings e 6, arranged in such a manner that there shall be two openings effecting communication. between the interior of the refrigerating-counter and each chamber of the display-case, and these openings are preferably elongated and so disposed that each opening shall be common to two adjacent chambers-that is to say, shall partly lie upon each side of one of the partitions b, as shown. By providing each chamber with two openings a circulation of cold air between the refrigerating-counter and the chambers in the display-case is effected and a low temperature suitable for the preservation of the articles displayed in said case maintained.

Our combined refrigerating counter and display-case is designed to be set up in the place of the usual counter, th us effecting great economy of floorspace and serving all the functions of an ordinary counter, while the goods are preserved against loss or deterioration and are displayed in a fresh condition and attractive manner and in a way most convenient to serving the same to customers.

Having thus described our-invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A combined refrigerating-counter and display-case comprising a counter provided with a refrigerator-cornpartment and a display-case of less width than the counter-top and disposed upon the front of the same and provided with transverse partitions forming a series of chambers, each chamber having a transparent front and a hinged door at its rear, and openings in the counter-top, forming communication between the said refrigerator-compartment and said chamber, substantially as described.
