Patented Oct. 14, 1952 joPENTor ritozeN'roop REFRIGERATOR Richard E. Pabst, San Antonio, Tex., assignor to Ed Friedrich, Inc., San Antonio, Tex., a corporation of Texas Application January 30, 1950, Serial No. 141,268
. 1 My invention has for its objects to provide: 1. v An open top refrigerated display case having a display compartment and a storage compartment with individual and cooling'or refrigerating coils, the air movements in both chambers being under the influence of a single blower.
' 2. A frozen food case having a display conipartment, a storage compartment, an air-pressure duct common to both compartments, an airsuction duct also common to both compartments, and a single blower for establishing air circulations in the two compartments between the pressureduct and the suction duct.
' 3. A frozen food casein which the display storage compartments are separated by a horizontal partitiongwhich forms the bottom of a common suction duct, the top of which is formed by the food shelf of the display compartment.
' Other objects will in part be obvious and in part will be pointed out hereinafter.
To the'attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, invention still further resides in the novel details of construction; combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described in the following detailed description, and then be particularly pointed out in the "appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a horizontal section on the line i-l of Fig. 2, the food shelf of the display compartment being omitted.
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2 of. Fig. l, with the food shelf in place.
Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section on the line 3-;3 of Fig. 2.
In the-drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, I is the case, which includes a back wall l a front wall l and a base H The interior exposed surfaces are metal sheathed, as at 2, and a triple glass window 3 is provided on the front wall l The case has two compartments, the upper or display compartment being indicated by DC, while the lower or storage compartment is indicated by SC. The two compartments are separated by a horizontal partition 1, which has air holes or passages 1 adjacent the front wall of the case and which has a stepped-up portion i adjacent the rear of the cabinet.
6 is a longitudinal vertical partition running from side to side of the cabinet and spaced from the back wall so as to leave a space constituting a common high-air-pressure duct, indicated by CPD. The wall 6 also has a stepped-up portion 6 an upwardly-rearwardly inclined portion 6 discharge end 3 Claims. (Cl. 62-895) and a vertical upper-end portion 6 One of the longitudinal edges of the partition I is supported by the stepped-up portion 6 of the vertical partition 6. I
Immediately below the partition portion i and within the common pressure duct CPD, is a lower refrigeration coil unit I2 the rear of which is covered by a plate 13 secured to the wall por tion 6 in order that the chilled air passing from the coil unit [2 will be forced to pass through the apertures 6 Above the level of the unit l2 and bridging the space between the rear wall of the case and the partition portion 6 is another refrigerating coil unit Hi, the air chilled by it passing in part through a row of openings 6 in the partition portion 6 and the remainder passing up the partition portion 6, 6 and over the latter into the display compartment or chamber DC, a concave baiile i5 being provided to cooperate with the partition portion 6 in directing the air-flow over the goods in the compartment DC toward the front of the case.
Adjacent the front wall of the cabinet, but
spaced from the same by a stepped supporting strip I1, is a glass baffie holder [8 which supports aglass baffle IB The strip l1 between the wall l and the bafile holder l8 has a row of returnair-holes I! that communicate with the common suction or low pressure duct CSD formed between the partition l and a display shelf l9'that is'supported by the strip I1 and the partition portion i The common suction duct CSD has a central opening 1* in the partition 1 for passing air into the blower box 3 that is located adjacent the wall 6 and contains a blower unit 9 Whose It delivers air under pressure, through an opening 6 in the wall-6, into the common pressure duct CPD. Air enters thebox 8 only through the top, that portion of which' that lies beneath the partition portion i being closed by a U-shaped baffle I I. A suitable blower unit 9 is located in the box 8 and takes the air from the box and forces it into the duct CPD, while at the same time creating a suction to draw air into the box.
Access to the chamber SC is had through a door-opening 4 that is normally closed by a door 5.
The improvements made by me enable the displayed merchandise in the chamber DC to be cooled by cold air passed over the top and by conduction through the metal shelf IQ of the return cool air in duct CSD, while the merchandise in the chamber SC will be kept at a low temperature by the air chilled by the coil unit l2 and, as the air from the chamber SC is returned at the front adjacent the door 5, periodic opening of the door-when it is desired to remove or insert merchandise from or into the storage chamber-will not effect a substantial temperature increase in the chamber SC.
The advantages of my construction of refrigerator over those in common use will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.
