GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 469,000, dated February 16, 1892.

Be it known that I, PATRICK SCANLA'N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Garbage and for other Purposes, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to a garbage-receptacle adapted to be hoisted over a wagon or other dumping-place and to deliverl the contents of the receptacle through the bottom thereof into such wagon or into such other dumping-place; and the object of my invention is to obtain a receptacle which can be placed Within a second and outer receptacle and contained therein, and thereby covered or jacketed, and, further, a receptacle adapted to be hoisted by a crane over the wagon or other dumping-ground and to there have its contents dumped through the bottom of such receptacle.

I have illustrated my invention by drawings -forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a'wagon having a hoisting device attached thereto adapted to hoist my garbage-receptacle into position for the delivery of the contents thereof into such wagon; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the garbagereceptacle on line 2 2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a plan view of such receptacle, and Fig. t a front elevation of lifting-hooks adapted to bev used in connection with the garbage-receptacle and hoisting device therefor.

A is a Wagon.

a ct are the longitudinal side sticks of the wagon-body.

B is a construction, preferably of boileriron, forming the seat of the wagon to which the hoisting device used with my invention is attached, and also the support for the pieces forming a part of such hoisting device.

C is my garbage-receptacle.

D D are hooks secured on ring E. Y I-Iooks D D form a fastening device, which can be secured to the receptacle C and the receptacle thereby hoisted by-a crane inthe usual way of hoisting weights. Garbage-receptacle C is composed of the cylinder F and pieces G G, hinged thereto and forming the bottom thereof.

H is a flange extending around the cylinder Fv near the top thereof.

I I are shields, each one secured rigidly to the cylinder F on the inside thereof, forming a guard protecting the springs J J respectively, from being interfered with by the contents kof the garbage-receptacle C. These springs are secured at one end to the cylinder F and at the other end to the parts or pieces G G, forming the bottom of the receptacle.

K is an eyebolt on piece G, and K is a rod extending through holes in cylinder F and through the eyebolt K and locking the parts G G together, so that a iirrn bottom is formed in the receptacle C.

L is a support for receptacle G and may consist of a cylinder open at both ends, standing upon one of its ends and adapted to have the receptacle C placed therein, with a angc H of the receptacle resting upon the upper edge thereof. Y The cover of the receptacle consists of part K3, fitting onto cylinder F, and lid K4, placed in part K3.

In operating this hoisting device with the A garbage-receptacle C, the hooks D D are secured or attached to the bale g of the receptacle C and the cord or cable Wound or unwound around the drum thereof. The receptacle C is then carried over the wagon, after which the receptacle can be lowered toward the wagon-body the precise distance desired, such distance being determined by the person about to empty the receptacle into the wagon until the proper height is attained, when the rod K is withdrawn from the cylinder F and eyebolt K, and the weight of the contents of the receptacle C will force the pieces G G downward and outward, so thatthe contents of the receptacle will fall through the bottom thereof and into the wagon. The springs J J will then retract and close the bottom, after which the rod K is again inserted in proper place and the bottom thereby secured and the receptacle then swung around and lowered into the supporting-cylinder L. The eyebolts K being designed to catch the rod K and hold the bottom pieces G G from falling or being forced downward by the contents of the receptacle against the tension of the springs J J it will be evident IOO that if part lettered K2 of eyebolt K be cut away, leaving a hook to engage with rod K', the functional part 'of the eyebolt, so far as the same is used by me, will be retained.

Having thus described my invention and its manner of operation, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a garbage-receptacle, the combination of a cylinder, pieces hinged thereto adapted to form when closed the bottom thereof, a catch on one of such hinged pieces, a rod adapted to engage with the cylinder and with the catch on the hinged piece, and springs attached at one end to the Wall ot the cylinder and at the other end to the hinged pieces which form when closed the bottom of the receptacle, substantially as described.

In a garbage-receptacle, the combination of a cylinder, pieces hinged thereto adapted to forni when closed the bottom thereof, :t catch on one of Such hinged pieces, at rod adapted to engage with the cylinder and with the catch on the hinged piece, and springs attached at one end to the Wall of the cylinder and at the other end to the hinged pieces which form when closed the bottom of the receptacle, Wit-h a ange extending around the cylinder', and a second cylinder into Which the first-named cylinder can be placed With the flange thereon resting on the upper edge thereof, substantially as described.
