Description

(No Model.) SOAP HOLDER.
No. 468,868. Patented Feb. 16, 1892.
WITNESSES NVENTOR UNiTED STATES PATENT Grimes.
VILLIAM S. FIOKETT, OF ROCHESTER, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENIS PLACE.
TO VILLIAM WILOKLOXV AND MARY FRY, OF SAME SOAP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,868, dated February 16, 1892.
Application filed August 4, 1891. Serial No. 401,633. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it knownthat 1, WILLIAM S. FIOKETT, a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soap- Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it'pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to devices for distributing powdered soap and other finely-divided substances. Great difficulty has been experienced in devices of this character because such substances as soap are apt to become packed. As a consequence of this tendency, arches or bridges are formed in the material over the discharge-orifice, and, further, the joints between the movable parts in or near the discharge-orifice are liable to become filled with compacted particles, so as to obstruct their operation.
The present invention has for its object to improve upon prior devices proposed for obviating these evils and to provide mechanism simple in form and efficient in action for the purposes mentioned; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the device. Fig. 2 is a like view of a modified detail in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4 are also views of details. V
Numeral 1 indicates the soap-holder, provided with a removable cover 2 and with a bottom 3, preferably removable, and 3 denotes a packing-ring. Said holder is provided with a funnel-shaped diaphragm or hopper at, having in its bottom an oblong openinget. 5 denotes a partial tube, secured to the diaphragm immediately under said opening, and (5 is a tapered spout, oblong in cross-section, secured to the under side of the tubular part 5, the construction being such that the con tents of the holder can be discharged through said spout. Within the tube 5 is arranged a rotatable discharging-roller 7, having a stop 7 engaging the end of the tube and provided with pockets 8. The ends of the roller have hearings in the tube, and the pockets 8 are in length about equal to the oblong opening 4. The discharging-roller has a loose axis or shaft 9, prolonged at one end beyond the wall of the holder through a slot 9 therein and provided with an operating-lever handlehaving a weighted arm 10. The shaft has fixed on its inner end arms 11. 12 are stops secured in the path of said arms.
13 indicates a ratchet fixed on the end of the roller, and 14 is a driving-pawl pivotally supported in the bracket-arm 15, fixed on the shaft.
16 indicates a stirring-wheel fixed on a shaft 17, loosely resting in bearings 18, formed in a,
ring 19 or in any suitable manner. This wheel has notches 20, adapted to engage the edges or ribs 21, formed on the discharging-roller between the pockets 8.
i The device is operated in the following described manner: The holder above its diaphragm or disch'argehopper 4t beingsupplied with powdered soap or other substance, said substance can be discharged in small quantity, as often as desired, by turning the roller through the medium of its shaft and handle, the pawl 14 suitably engaging the ratchet 15 for this purpose. The arms 11 and stops 12 are so arranged with respect to each other and the roller that the latter can be moved continuously only a definite distance. Said distance in the present case is one-sixth of a revolution. The six pockets 8 are so arranged that when the roller is moved to its normal position by the weighted lever-arm .1 O'- a pocket will be immediately under the open ing t in the diaphragm or hopper and will be filled with soap. The stops 12 at such time hold the roller against the weight of the lever. If the roller then be turned a sixth of a revolution, or until arms 11 engage the stops son of the engagement of the ribs or edges that are formed between the pockets with the notches in the stirring-wheel the latter is By rea- IOO caused to partially rotate every time the roller is moved.
In Fig. 2 is shown amodification of the stirring-wheel and its axle-bearings. The brackets 22 receive the axle, the length of which is less than the diameter of the hopper, so that it is free to move endwise through a short distance. Stirring-arms 23 may be arranged at an angle to the side of the wheel. According to this modification, the stirring-wheel and its shaft are free to move in different planes.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In combination, the holder for powdered material, the hopper, the discharge-roller provided with pockets and rotatably supported at and below the opening in the bottom of the hopper, mechanism for rotating said roller, and a stirring-wheel inclosed within the holder and hopper and provided with teeth adapted to engage the roller located below the hopper, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, the holder for powdered material, the hopper, the discharge-roller provided with pockets and rotatably supported at and below the opening in the bottom of the hopper, mechanism for rotating said roller, and a stirring-Wheel inclosedwithin the holder and hopper and provided with teeth adapted to engage the roller and located below the hopper and having an axle less in length than the diameter of the hopper in the same plane, and suitable bearings therefor, substantially as set forth.
3. In a holder and distributor for powdered material, the combination of the hopper, the discharge-roller provided with pockets and rotatably supported in the openingin the bottom of the hopper, said roller having a loose shaft or axle provided with a Weighted arm, a ratchet fixed on the roller, and a drivingpawl fixed on the shaft, substantially as set forth. v
4:. In a holder and distributer for powdered material, the combination of the hopper, the
