UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. BENDER AND JOSEPH H. BINGMA, OF HIGHLAND, KANSAS.
AUTOMATIC GRAIN WEIGHER AND REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 394,440, dated December 11, 1888.
Application tiled June 28, 1888. Serial No. 278,390. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN K. BENDER and JOSEPH H. BINGMAN, citizens ot' the United States, and residents of Highland,in the county of vDoniphan and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Grain lVeighers and Registers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingI had to the aecompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ot this speci'lication.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of our improvement and is a side view thereof, and Fig. 2 is a top or plan view.
The invention relates to improvements in automatic grain weighers and registers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object ot' the invention is to provide a machine that is not liable to become choked or clogged by grain, as there are no valves or small tubes in its construction.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the casing, consisting ot' the end walls, a, and the curved side walls, a. An inclined chute, B, opens outwardly from the bottom and the device is supported on the legs l).
C is the weighing-beam, extending outwardly through a slot, b', in the side of the casing. The said beam is properly graduated into pounds and fractions thereof, and the adjustable weight c may be secured at any point on the beam by means of the setscrew c.
The beam has its portion within the casing branched and forming the arms D, which extend along the side wall, and then outwardly at right angles, as at (I, to the cent-er of the end walls. crumed on pivots in the bearings (I, secured to the inner side of the end walls. E is the grain-weighing box,di vided into two V-shaped sections, l1 l1", by the central partition, e, and the box has pivotal bearings fin the ends of the arms l). (.)ne oi' said bearings extends outwardly through a slot-opening in the end wall of the casing, and is formed with the crank f.
The pivots f are secured to the outer ends of the weighing-box in line with the central partition, but somewhat above the bottom The arms D are ful.`
line of the box, so that the bottom of the section F or F being filled with grain is at one side of the pivotal center. lVhen the box is depressed by the grain in the section, the greater weight is at one side of the pivotal point and turns the box on its pivots, allowing the grain to escape into and out of the chute and presenting the mouth of the other section to the grain coming from the elevator. The curved arms K, secured to the bottom ot' the box, are designed by coming in contact with the transverse bar L in the casing to limit the movement of the weighing-box, and the said arms are preferably of spring material, so as to relieve the parts from a direct shock. The curved detents G on the outer side of the weighing-box alternately bear against 011e of the rollers H, pivoted in bearings secured to the inner side of the casing, as shown. These detents, in connection with the rollers, hold the sections in proper positions to be iilled, and when the necessary amountof grain falls in the section to balance the weight the box is forced downward till the detent comes below the roller, when the box automatically turns and dumps the grain.
The register l may be of any desired construction, and to this part of the machine we make no claim. The lever i, which operates the register, is connected to the crank f by the rod j, and it obvious that upon every turn of the weighing-box the crank will turn the register one point.
A door may be hinged or otherwise placed over the opening at the top of the casing.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination, with the casing, the transverse bar L, an d the weighing-box, of the curved spring-arms K, secured to the bottom of said box, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the weighingbox, consisting of the V-shaped sections, the
case, and the weighing-beam, oi' the bearing extending through a slot opening in t-he casing, and having a crank portion and the connecting-rod, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence ot' two witnesses,
JOHB,T K. BENDER. J OSEPHl H. BINGMAN. IVitnesses;
