Bo i known that I, HERMAN D. GREEN- WALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, Winnebago county, VVisconsin, lmve invented certain new and usefnl Improvennentsin Penoils, 0f which the following is a specifiontion.

The bject 0f my invention is t01nake a lead-pencil in seccions, each of which carries a point of 1ead and which are rernovably counected togother, so that as the point becomes worn 01113 the section containing it 1nay be removed and a new point exposed; and nr1y invention oonsists in the features and details 0f eonstruction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my pencil. Fig. 2 shows the same provided with a cover part1y broken away. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 the Same slightly modified.

In making my improved peneil I make it; With a number of sections A, each provided with a point of 1ead B and hollowed out so as to receive the point 0f the next; succeeding section. The seotions are preferably provided With slight shoulders O, so that; when they are being adj nsted together in plane eaoh seetion whieh enters another will enter it only the desired distanee.

In Fig. 3 I have shown the sections one slid into the other, while in Fig. 4 I have shown the portion of each section whieh enters oho next 0ne provided With serew threads D, which enter a series 0f threads adapted to receiv.e them in the hollowed end of Ehe next section.

In Fig. 2 I have shown a eover E, whioh may be may be made of paper o1 otherwise, as desired, which conceals the seetion and which as a section is to be removed 02m be broken around at the junctnre of the two sections where the separation is t0 be runde.

Any desired nurnber of sections may be used in making the peneil, and as theyare sucsively removed as the lead wears 01113 each seetion so removed 1nay be applied to the other end of the pencil, so as to keep it the dsired length.

In Figs. 3 and 4, which are enlarged views, oonsiderable space appears between the point of lead. I prefer, however, to so arrange tho seotions as 10 have the lead in one mach almost t0 the lead in the .next.

What I regrd as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1.. As a new artiole of mannfactnro, a penci1 comprising a nnmberof sections provided with points of lead and removably connected together, whereby as one point is consumed the seotion containing it xnay be removed, substantially as described.

2. As a new a1tiole of manufactnre, a pencil comprising a number of seetions ]hollowed a1; one end and provided With points of lead at the other and with the point of one section insertedintothehollowed end of oho nextwhereby as one point is consumed the sec1bion coutainingit may be removed and inserned in tho opposite end 0f the peneil, snbsantially zus described.

3. As a new article of mannfacturo, a pencil comprising a nnmber of sections provided With points of 1ead and removably oonnected togeher, and a cover ooncealing t11e juncture of 1;he seotions, whereby as one point is consnnned the seetion oontaining i1; may be rennoved by pa1ting the eover a-t the jnnctnre 01: the two, snbstantially as desoribed.
