ARNOLD NEUIIAUS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
COMBINED CIGAR-LIGHTING AND ADVERTISING APPARATU S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,452, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed March 28, 1890. Serial No. 345,800. (No model.) Patented in England January 30, 1890, M0. 7,220.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD NEUHAUS, wine and spirit merchant, a citizen of the Repub lie of Switzerland, residing at London, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a (Iombined Cigar-Lighting and Advertising Apparatus, (for which I have previously obtained LettersPatent in Great Britain, dated January 30, 1800, No. 7,220,) of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined cigar-lightin g and advertising apparatus, and has for its object means for exposing to view a fresh advertisement or advertisements each time the apparatus is used for lighting a cigar.
In carrying out my invention the advertisements are arranged upon the periphery of a drum or drums carried upon a horizontal shaft capable of revolving within a closed casing provided with apertures in front of each advertising'drum, which apertures permit of only one advertisement being visible at a time. The said drum or drums is or are operated by suitable ratchet mechanism actuated by means of a movable arm upon the latter being pulled down from a vertical to a horizontal position. Upon the release of the said arm it returns to its original vertical position by means of a coiled spring.
In constructing a single apparatus or one in which only one advertisement-drum is used I adopt the following arrangement, viz: The drum is provided with, say eight advertisements and is fixed to a horizontal shaft capable of rotation within a casin g. This shaft is rotated by means of a ratchet-wheel fixed thereto and having eight teeth. A second shaft parallel with the first-named one is also mounted in the back part of the casing and is provided with an arm or crank, to which is pivoted a weighted pawl engaging with the teeth of the aforesaid ratchetwheel. To this second shaft is also fixed another arm or crank. In the upper part of the casing is mounted a third horizontal shaft parallel with the advertising-drum, and centrally lengthwise of this shaft is fixed the end of a tubular arm working radially in a slot formed in the casing when pulled down from a vertical to a horizontal position.
The other end of this arm carries asmall gas-burner provided with a draft-cup, and in the body of the said arm is a loose valve so arranged that when the arm is in a vertical position the said valve nearly cuts off the gas, only permitting a small quantity to pass sufficient to maintain a very small flame, but upon the arm being pulled down into a horizontal position the said valve will shift and allow more gas to pass, so as to give a good flame for lighting a cigar or pipe. Upon being released the arm returns to its vertical position by the action of a coiled spring fixed to the aforesaid third shaft. 011 this third shaft there is fixed an arm or crank immediately over and parallel with the arm or crank fixed near the center of the under or second shaft, and these arms or cranks are connected together by means of a connecting-rod,and thus upon pull ing by means of a ring or handle the arm from the vertical to a horizontal position a partial revolution is given to the second and third shafts and an eighth of a revolution to the ratchet-wheel and advertising-drum, thus exhibiting a fresh advertisement to View. Upon the arm being released and returned to the vertical position by means of the aforesaid coiled spring the pawl engages with the next tooth of the ratchet-wheel ready for the next operation. Spring friction-washers are placed on each side of the advertising-drum to prevent vibration and insuring the requisite revolution only of the drum. The gas is conducted to the burner by a piece of indiarubber tubing attached to theend of the arm and to the end of a small supply-pipe passing through the casing.
In constructing a double-advertising apparatus, or one having two drums exhibiting two advertisements at the same time, the said drums are fixed to a horizontal shaft, so as to leave a space between them, and are inclosed in a casing similar to that described with reference to the single drum device, but having two openings for exhibiting the advertisements instead of one. Against the end of one of the drums and in the space between them is fixed to the shaft the ratchet-wheel for operating the drums. A bracket is fixed to the back of the casing centrally between the drums, and is formed with projecting sides, which assist in supporting the shaft carrying 7 spring, and a crank similar to that described in reference-to the single drum arrangement; but according to this device one of the shafts and its crankand the connecting-rod joining it with the other crank may be dispensed with and the weighted pawl be pivoted to the crank on the short shaft, which pawl engages directly with the teeth of the ratchet-wheel, and in order that my said invention may be more fully understood I will describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings,
in which-- V 7 W Figure 1 represents in front elevation a single drum apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a crosssection.
a is the drum provided with advertisements on its periphery and fixed to a shaft 1), capable of revolving in a casing 0, provided with an aperture 0. d is the ratchet-wheel fixed to the shaft 1), into whichrgears a weighted pawl e, pivoted to a crank e, fixed to a second shaftf. To the shaftfis also fixed another crank g. A third shaft his mounted in the upper'part of the casing and has fixed to it the end of a tubular arm 41, which works upon being pulled down in a slot j, formed in the casing. The arm 2 carriesasmall gas-burner k, provided with a draft-cup Z and also a loose valve m, which regulates the amount of gas fed to the burner, according to the position of the arm. On the shaft h is fixed a crank n immediately above the crank g, and these two cranks are connected by a rod 0. Upon the operator'pulling by means of the ring or handle 'i' the arm 11 from its vertical to a horizontal position the pawl e actuates through the ratchet-wheel cl the shaft b, so as to revolve the drum a a part of a revolution sufficient to expose one of the advertisements to view, and upon the arm 'i being released it is brought back to its vertical position ready for another stroke by means of the coiled spring 19, acting on the shaft h. Spring friction-washers q q arepl'aced at each end of the drum to prevent the latter revolving too far. 4' is an india-rubber tube for conducting gas to the burner, being attached to the lower end of the arm i and also to the end of a small supplypipe 8, passing through the casing.
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 show my invention applied to a double-advertising drum arrangement of apparatus, in which the aforesaid shaft h, crank g, and connecting-rod 0 are dispensed with. A bracket 19 is fixed to the back of the casing and has projecting sides p',wh1ch support the central part of the drum-shaft. This bracket carries a small shaft q, upon which are fixed the Weighted pawl r and a coiled spring 3". The pawl r engages directly with the teeth of the ratchet-Wheel e, and the spring 3 pulls back the arm ito its vertical position upon its being released. 7 W
Having thus particularly described and as certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is. p
