SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,447, dated February 9, 1892.

Be it known that I, CALVIN II. BUCHWAL- TER, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sponge-Holders for washing Negatives and for other Purposes, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to a new and useful sponge-holder and sponge combined.

The object of my invention is to providea simple and eiiicient clamp or holder adapted to receive a sponge and affording atthe same time a handle for manipulating the sponge and a broad flat surface for supporting the body of the sponge, the points being arranged to clamp the edges of the sponge and thereby hold it in position and form a combined sponge and sponge-holder havinga broad fiat surface, which is particularly applicable for washing negatives.

My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a lateral elevation showing in dotted lines the position to which some parts may be moved, and Fig. 2 a cross-section through Fig. 1 on the line 93 0:.

In my drawings, A represents the sponge, which should be Wide enough to pass around the sides of the holder, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

The holder itself consists, essentially, of two parts-the handle B and the clamp O. The clamp O is hinged to the handle at D, as shown, and its free end passes into a recess E in the handle, which handle is likewise provided with a olamping-band F, which may be moved to the position shown at F, as the clamp C may be moved to the position shown at O. The end of the handle is squared or flattened,

as shown clearly in Fig. 2, so as to present a broad surface for the reception of the sponge. The sponge A being folded into position around the handle proper, the clamp C is closed and looked upon it in the position shown in the drawings,being held in position by the band F.

The handle is provided on its inner side next to the clamp with two rows of points or ribs a, extending longitudinally near the edges of the handle, and the clamp C is provided with longitudinal recesses to receive the points or ribs in the handle, and when the sponge is put in. position the edges of the sponge are clamped between these two longitudinal rows of points or ribs and the recesses, and the fiat surface of the handle affords an extended bearing for the body of the sponge.

\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination, with the handle B, having a flattened extension, of a clamp pivoted to the end of the handle, a locking device for the clamp, the adjacent sides of the flattened extension of the handle and clamp being provided near their edges with longitudinal rows of locking ribs and grooves, and a sponge surrounding the handle, the body resting on the flattened portion thereof and its edges being drawn over the edges of the flattened portion of the handle and secured between the interlocking ribs and grooves of the handie and clamp, substantially as described.
