Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,684, dated August 8, 1846.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LAIGHTON, of Portsmouth, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have in vented anew and useful Improvement in the Manner of Constructing Enema-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof.
The principal object had in view in the manner of const-ructing my enema chair is so to arrange the apparatus as that the person using it, may, without rising from the seat, remove an injection pipe and its appendages and make use of a pan which is combined with the chair; thereby rendering the use thereof more convenient than under any previous mode of constructing such ap paratus.
In the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective representation of the whole apparatus. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof with the seat of the chair removed, and Fig. 3 shows one of the side pieces `of the chair frame.
A A is the syringe and B B a metallic tube leading therefrom to a flexible tube C O that is made fast to the lower end of the injection pipe D. This pipe is attached to a metallic plate E E which is capable of being depressed and of being made to slide back in a recess cut at F for that purpose in t-he back frame of the chair.
Gr is a handle made fast to the plate at its end E by a pin that passes through a slot, or opening shown at H, H Fig. 3, which is made through the side of the frame L of the chair. When this handle is drawn to the upper end of the opening or slot H the pipe D will be in the position shown in Fig. 1 ready for use. By depressing the handle Gr and by passing it up along the groove H, the pipe will be removed and will be carried back into the notch or recess I (Fig. l) made in the seat of the chair for that purpose.
J is a pan of earthenware or metal which is inclosed in the ordinary way by the side frames of the chair and may be removed by lowering the door K.
Having thus fully described the manner in which I construct my enema chair and shown the operation and use of its respective parts what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The manner herein set fort-h in which I combine the injection pipe therewith so that it may be removed after being used while the person retains his seat,the arrangement and combination being substantially the same with that herein described.
