SURGICAL-INSTRUMENT CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,224, dated February 2, 1892.

Be it known that I, DE LANCY KENNEDY, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Surgical or other Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of ,cases of this class, whereby the instruments may be readily removed or placed therein; and the invention consists in the several details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth in the specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the case open, showing the instruments in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of aI portion of the case proper, showing one of the iiaps on which the instruments are held elevated. Fig. 3 is a view of the clamp detached.'

Fig. 4 is a transverse, section showing the case partly open. Fig. 5 shows a modiiication of the hinge connection for the flaps.

Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several figures.

The outer case consists, preferably, of two rigid sides A and A', joined together bythe iiexible part c and the wings h b b2, of dexible material, adapted to be folded over into position when the case is closed. The wing b contains one part c of a locking device adapted to engage another part c on the outer face of the rigid side A.

D D D are flaps of suitable material, preferably rigid, hinged at one end to the side A by means of the hinges d d. In Figs. 1,2, and 4 metal hinges are shown; but in Fig. a suitable iieXible material is employed. The metal hinges are preferable as tending to more effectually prevent lateral movement of the naps; but the iiexible material may be substituted, if desired.

lVhen metal hinges are used, I prefer to provide the section attached to the flap with an open slot d ,running lengthwise on its upper edge, in order that when the iiap is swung completely over it may be detached from the hin ge-section attached to the case. Each lap is provided near its hinge with loops c e, into which are inserted the ends of the handles of the instruments E.` It is also provided with a double-spring clamp F, so arranged that an instrument may be slipped sidewise under each spring end f. Each clamp is riveted mid- Gis a leaf of stiif material joined at its edge g to the side A and forming with it and the end sections g g a pocket G. To the outer face of the leaf G are attached the loops g2, into which may be inserted small vials, syringes, or any other similar articles usually carried by surgeons. The leaf G is provided with end wings 7L 7l., adapted to fold over onto the leaf when the case is closed. Vithin the pocket G a smaller pocket I-l may be arranged, as shown in Fig. 4.. I do not, however, limit myself to the particular form of outer casing herein described, nor to the arrangement of the pockets and wings, as they may be varied to suit different tastes; neither do I limit myself to the double-spring clamp, as itis obvious that instead of the two clamps being formed from one piece of metal they could be made separate and secured independently to the flap.

I-Iaving described my invention, l claiml. An instrument-case having a series of flaps hinged thereto, each nap adapted to swing on its hinge independently of the others in the series, and provided with devices for holding the instruments, substantially as described.

2. An instrument-case having a flap hinged thereto and provided with devices for holding the instruments, the hinge-section on the ap having an open slot running lengthwise thereofon its upper edge, whereby the flap may be disconnected from the case, substantially as described.

3. In an instrument-case, a series of .fieps hinged to said case, each flap adapted to swing on its hinge independently of the others of the series, combined with loops and springclamps secured to the naps, the loops adapted to receive the ends of the handle of the inio strument and the spring-clamps being constructed and arranged to permit the instrument Afo be pushed under or removed from them sidewise, substantially as described.
