SAW-FILING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. d68,221, dated February 2, 1892.

Be it known that I, JOHN II. DIEHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Queen City, in the county of Schuyler and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Ma chines; and I do hereby declare the following to be ai'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in saw-filing machines.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine or apparatus which is carried by the saw-clamping frame, and is adapted to be moved thereon step by step, the part of the machine carrying the file being adapted to swing upon a pivot and engage with an adjustable arm to regulate the depth of the cut, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of a part of the frame.
' A A refer to the side pieces of a clamp, between which the saw to be operated upon is secured. The outer faces of these side pieces are provided at suitable points with V-shaped guideways a a, with which engage the feet I) of the carriage-frame on one side and a springactuated bar carried by the carriage-frame on the other side. The spring 0, to which the bar I) is secured, is attached to the depending legs b of the carriage by set-screws, and said bar is held against a twisting movement by the ends thereof entering recesses formed in the legs 0 To one of the side pieces of the clamp is rigidly attached a ratchet-plate G, with the teeth of which a pawl 0, formed on aplate D, is adapted to engage, said plate being carried by a lever D, fulcrumed upon the carriage, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; The plate D carries a spring (Z, the free end of which is adapted to run upon the offset 011 the upper side of the clamp adjacent to the ratchetplate 0, so as to hold said end normally elevated to cause the pawl c to engage with the ratchet-plate when the lever is moved and advance the carriage one step. The forward movement of the carriage is limited bya setscrew (1, carried by the plate D. By this con struction I provide an improved feeding device, so that with one ratchet-plate the carriage can be advanced to suit saws of difi'erent numbers or those having teeth spaced at a greater or less distance from each other. It is obvious that when the lever is moved in one direction the end of the plate D, with which the pawl is formed, will slide upon the ratchet-plate and will not affect the proper movement of the carriage.
The upper portion of the carriageB is centrally apertured for the reception of a setscrew E, which holds thereon a casting F, to which the guide carrying the file-frame is adjustably secured. By this construction the file-frame is adapted to be rotated upon the pivot E and can be secured in the desired position, so as to give the proper set or bevel to the cutting-edge of the tooth, a gage f being marked on the carriage, over which a pointer 7, formed on the file-frame support, passes and indicates the angle at which the file is cutting. The guide G for the file-frame can be adjusted to incline the file-frame in either direction, as said guide is pivoted on the castin g F and provided with a set-screw, as shown.
The file-frame is made up of a bar 11, one end of which is bent, as shown, to enter a socket 11, into which one end of the file 'fits, and in this socket is rigidly secured abar h, which extends therefrom parallel with the straight portion of the bar II, and upon these bars slides an adjustable section 1, into which the opposite end of the file fits andis secured by a set-screw. The handle is screwed on the threaded end of the bar h and assists in holding the file in place. hen the file-frame is in position upon the carriage, the bar h thereof will engage with an arm 6, extending from the carriage, and limit the depth of out, said arm being pivoted to the carriage and adjusted by a set-screw c In operation the carriage is moved to one end of the clamps, the saw having been previously properly secured in position. The setscrew d is then adjusted to give the proper movement to the carriage on each reciprocation of the lever D and the arm e setto limit the downward movement of the file, according to the depth it is desired to'cut the tooth. The handle is grasped in one hand while the opposite hand rests upon the hand-rest K and the file-frame reciprocated until the tooth has been sharpened to the desired degree. After the tooth has been sharpened the lever D is rocked, which moves the carriage one step or V in position for operating upon the next tooth, the file-frame being changed to the opposite angle, so that the proper bevel will be given to thetocth. A uniform bevel can be given each tooth by watching the pointer f.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed toprovide a saw-filing machine with a movable carriage, which is adaptedto be secured to the clamping framaand I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw-filing machine, thecombination of the clamping-plates having longitudinal guideways or recesses, a carriage carrying a spring-actuated plate adapted to slide therein,
one of the clamping-pieces having a ratchetbar secured thereto, and a spring-actuated plate or pawl D,-carried by a lever fulcru med on the carriage and adapted to engage with the ratchet-plate to move the carriagestepby step, substantially as set forth.
2. In a saw-filin g machine, thec'om bination of a carriage secured movably ,to a clampingframe, said clamping-frame carrying a'ratc'hetbar,a plate D, having a pawl for engaging with the ratchet-bar, a lever pivoted thereto and to the-carriage, and means carried by the plate D for limiting the movement of the carriage, substantially as set forth.
3. In a saw-filing machine, the combinationof a movable carriage adapted to be secured to a clamping-frame having a ratchet-plate, a plate D, having a rigid pawl c, a springd for holding the plate normally in contact with the ratchet-plate, a set-screw carried by the plate for limiting the movement of the carriage, and a lever pivoted to the plate and fulcrumed on the carriage for operating the same, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a saw-filing machine, of a carriage, a file-carrying frame secured to said carriage, and an adjustable'arm e, pivoted to the carriage, with which a member of the file-frame is adapted to engage-to limit the downward movement thereof,- substantially as set forth. 1
5. In a saw-filing machine-a file-carrying frame consisting of parallel bars-H and h,
. and a movable frame I, to which the file is secured, means for connecting the file-frame to a traveling carriage tohave aho'ri zontal and vertical swi n'ging movement, and means for limiting the'downward' movement of the fileframe, substantially as set forth.
6. In a saw-filing machine,th'e eom'bi-nation of a file-frame constructed substantially as shown and adapted to have a reciprocating and oscillating movement, means for limiting the downward movement of the file, a carriage 13, connected to a clamping-frame, and mechanism for advancing said carriage step by step, substantially as set forth.
