EMBOSSING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,168, dated February 2, 1892.
Application led April 1S, 1891.

Be it known that I, HERMANN ZTTZEwirz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embossing-Machines, of which the following is Va specification.
The present invention relates more especially to machines for embossing wood by means of a heated pattern-roller, which is pressed with great force against the wood or other material that is to be embossed and slowly rolled over it; and the object of the said invention is to improve such machines.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of novelty that are particularly pointed out in the claims hereinafter, and which are first fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a side elevation of the improved embossing-machine with some of the parts removed and others shown in section on lines hereinafter indicated. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, the section being mainly on the line 2 2, Fig. l, but partly on other lines hereinafter indicated. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section in various planes hereinafter indicated. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the journalboxes of the pattern-roller shaft.
The two castings forming the sides l and 2 of the base or pedestal are similar in outline and are bolted to the castings forming the back 3 and front 4, and each of said castings is bounded by a marginal flange for strengthening it. In the sides 1 and 2 are elongated openings 5, whose margins are parallel and vertical, save for a lateral recision at G.
Journaled in suitable bearings supported by the sides l and 2 is a shaft 7, having afast pulley 8, for receiving the driving-belt, and a loose pulley 9, to which said belt may be shifted to stop the machine. The belt is moved from one of these pulleys to the other by a shifter consisting of prongs l0, fixed to a rod 11, supported by the pedestal, so as to be capable of sliding endwise, and a lever 12, fulcrumed to a bracket-arm 13, projecting from the marginal flange of the side l of the Serial No. 889,400. (No model.)
double clutch, the other member 18 of which is secured to the shaft between said pinions by a spline and groove, so as to be incapable of turning upon the shaft, but capable of sliding longitudinally thereon, whereby one or the other of said pinions may be caused to turn with the shaft. The clutch is operated by means of a sliding rod 19, passing out through the side l of the pedestal and having at its outer end a handle 2O and a pair of levers 2l, connected by a pin 22, occupying a circumferential groove in the sliding member 18.
Journaled below shaft 7 is a second shaft 23, to which is secured two pinions 24 and 25 of different diameters, gearing with the pinions 15 and 16, respectively. One end of this shaft projects outside of the side l, and has secured to it a worm 26, which gears with a worm-wheel 27 secured to a vertical shaft 2S journaled in suitable bearings, supported by brackets 29 and 30 projecting from the side l. To this vertical shaft 28 near its upper end is secured a worm 3l, gearing with a worm-wheel 32 on a third horizontal shaft 33. The journal-bearings 34. of this shaft occupy the openings 5 and fit them so as to be capable of sliding vertically, but incapable of any considerable horizontal movement, andare held against longitudinal movement by lugs 34 that engage the inner faces of the sides;`

In Fig. 2 the Wheel 32, one of the boxes 34, one of the bearings 39, and the lug 41 beneath it, are shown in section in the Vertical plane of the axis of said wheel. In Fig. 3 the Worm 26 and the rear part ot' side 1 of the pedestal are shown in section in the horizontal plane of the axis of said Worm.
Secured to the shaft 33 is a roller 45. A portion of this roller and portions of the shafts 33 and 38 are omitted from Fig. 2,'in order to more clearly show the parts beyond. top of this roller occupies an opening between the front and back halves of a table 46, which is supported by anges 47 on the'V inside of" the pedestal. It is obvious that the rollers 45 and 68 may be transposed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The machine may be used either with or without heating the pattern-roller for embossing plastic compositions.
I am aware that it is not new to operate the platen of a press by means of toggles, and such is not the equivalent of my invention.
Having thus described' my invention, the following is what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an embossing-machine, the combination, with a pair of rollers and a shaft supporting each, of a rock-shaft, toggles interposed between the rock-shaft and the shaft of one of the rollers, so as to exert their force in opposite directions directly against both of` said shafts, and means for operating the rockshaft, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a pair of rollers and a shaft supporting each, of movable boxes, in which one of said shafts is journaled, an arm projecting from each of said boxes, a rock-shaft, and arms projecting from said rock-shaft, the arms of the j ournal-boXes and rockshaft being jointed to form toggles, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a pair of rollers and a shaft supporting each, of a rock-shaft, toggles connecting said rock-shaft with the shaft of one of said rollers, and separatelyadjustable bearings supporting the respective ends of said rock-shaft, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a pair of rollers and a shaft supporting each, of movable journal-boXes 3i, in which the shaft of one of said rollers is journaled, means for guiding said boxes, an arm 35, projecting from each, the rock-shaft 38, arms 37, projecting therefrom, and the pins 36, connecting the arms 35 and 37, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination,with the pedestal having openings 5, a pair of rollers, and a shaft supporting each, of the removable journalboxes 34, occupying said openings and having arms 35 projecting therefrom, the rockshaft 38, passing through said openings and having arms 37, supporting the arms 35, and means for rocking said rock-shaft, substantially as set forth.
G. The combination, with the pedestal having openings 5, the roller 45, and the shaft 33, of the movable journal-boxes 34, occupying said openings, the arms 35, projecting from said boxes, the rock-shaft 38, passing through said openings and jointed to arms 35, the bearings 39 for said rock-shaft situated in said openings, and the set-screws 40 for adjusting said bearings, substantially as set forth.
7. In an embossing-machine, the combination,\vith means for supporting the work and a pattern-roller, of a burner located in operative proximity to the outer periphery of said roller, and a shield embracing said roller for confining the heat, substantially as set forth.
S. In an embossing-machine, the combination, with means for supporting the work, the embossing-roller, and means for heating it, of a shield embracing said roller, and means for adjusting said shield toward and from said roller, substantially as set forth.
9. In an embossing-machine, the combination, with means for supporting the Work and an embossing-roller, of the shield 69, embracing the top side of said roller, the adjustable hangers 70, supporting said shield, and a burner, also supported by said hangers, substautially as set forth.
10. In an embossing-machine, the combination, with means for supporting the work and an embossing-roller, of the shield G9, the hangers 7 O, by which it is supported, the rod 73, the adjustable arm 7 5, the block 7 6, adjustably mounted on said arm, the block 77, adjust-ably connected to block 7 6, and the burner 7 8,supported by block 7 7, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination, with means for supporting the Work, the pattcrn-roller, and its shaft, of a verticallyadjustable lcross-head and boxes carried by said cross-head and in which said shaft is j ournaled, the lower halves of said boxes being hinged to the upper halves and adapted to drop away from the shaft and thereby permit the upper halves to be lifted` clear of the shaft by elevating the cross-head, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination, with means for supporting the work, the pattern-roller, and its shaft, of a vertically-adjustable cross-head and boxescarried by said cross-head and in which said shaft is journaled, said boxes consisting of the upper part 60, having opening G6 and perforated ings G1, and lower part G3, having perforated lugs G2, piu 64, and turnbolt 65, arranged substantially as set forth.
13. The combination, with means for supporting the worl,of the standards 51 and 52, having rabbets 54, the connecting-beam 53, the cross-head 56, having tongues 55,0ccupying said rabbets, the plates 57, bolted to the standards and overlapping said tongues, the hand-screw 91 for adjusting said cross-head, the two-part journal-boxes carried by said cross-head, the shaft journaled therein, and the pattern-roller on said shaft, substantially as set forth.
