FREDERICK D. SECOR, OF ODIN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAN-FORMING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,523, dated June 30, 1874; application filed April 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK D. SEcoR, of Odin, in the county of Marion and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sheet-Iron-Pan Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side view of my sheet-iron-pan machine. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
This invention has relation to machines for forming sheet-metal pans; and it consists mainly in the combination of bending devices with the folders and formers, by means of which the top edge of the pan can be turned over to receive the stiffening-wire usually applied to the edges of pans.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a bench or table of suitable height, on which a frame, B, is erected, having a cross-head, O, secured upon it. D designates a former or die of suitable shape and size, which is shouldered at d, and secured on the lower end of a square rod, b, which is guided by passing through two crossed braces, Bf. The upper end of the rod b is connected by a clevis to a handlever, E, which rests upon a spring, s, and is connected by a chain, e, to a treadle, E2, arranged beneath the table A. The spring s raises and holds up the former D, and the foot of the operator depresses this former, in which latter position it is firmly held by means of a catch-arm, E1. H designates a horizontal fixed bed, which is of the same shape and size as the bottom of the pan when formed, and to which four folders, I, are connected by hinges z'. These folders I are constructed with arms, and to these arms chains d are secured, which are carried up and around pulleys q, applied to the crossed braces B', and connected by means of swivels c to a chain, a. This chain a passes over a pulley, a, on cross-head O, and is thence carried around a windingdrum, R, having a crank-handle on one end. By turning the drum R the four folders I will be simultaneously moved up to the sides of the former D, and will press the sheet P evenly against this former, as shown in Fig. 2. When the rotation of the drum R is reversed, the four folders can be adjusted ilatly upon the table A. Before-bringing down the fornier D, or raising the four folders I, a sheet of metal of proper size and shape is adjusted upon the bed H, and in contact with three adjustable gages, h, which are right-angular portions, secured upon the table A, and adjustable toward and from one side and one end of the bed H. These gages will enable an attendant to readily adjust the pan-blanks in the proper place beneath the former D, and these gages are, as before stated, adjustable for paus of different sizes.
It is very important in the manufacture of sheet-metal pans, as above described, that their upper edges should be turned over while the pans are in the press, and held between the folders I and former D. This I accomplish by the following instrumentalities: Gr designates a rectangular band, which loosely embraces the upper portion of the former D, and which is vertically movable, independent of the former, and also with it. On top of the former D four levers, g, are applied, the outer ends of which are connected by links to the said band G, and also have chains f attached to them, which are carried down and around rollers p, and connected to a treadle, J, beneath the table A. The outer ends of these levers g are suspended from the upper portion of the frame B by means of springs S, which are indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, which springs lift the band G when the treadle J is released from pressure.
The operation of the machine described is briey as follows: A sheet-metal blank is adjusted on the bed H and against the guides h. The former D is depressed upon this blank, so as to hold it rmly. The folders I are then raised, and the parts constituting the sides of the pan are brought up in contact with the former D. The band G is then depressed, which forces the edges of the sheet P over the edges of plates j, which are secured to the the device for operating the said bending-band folders I, and thus crimps or folds over the G, substantially in the -manner and for the edges, ready to receive the Wire which stiffens purpose set forth.
them. The pan is then released from the 1n testimony that I claim the above I have former and folders, and removed from the ma- 4hereunto subscribed my name in the presence chine to repeat the operation. of two witnesses.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure FREDERICK D. SEGOB. by Letters Patent, is Witnesses:
The bending-band Gr, in combination With M. M. MARTIN, the plates j on the folders I, the former D, and WILLIAM WALKER.
