Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OBED GILDER, OF KINSMAN, OHIO.
IIVIPROVED AUTOMATIC RATCH ET AND PAWL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent vNo. 416,79E, dated March 14, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OBED GILDER, ot' Kinsman, Trumbull county, Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Self-Acting Pawl and Ratchet to prevent a reverse motion in s'ewing machinery and other machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the sa me, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
A is a ratchet-wheel placed on the shaft of any machinery which is intended to revolve in one direction only.
C is a pawl shaped somewhat like a letter T, and hung on a screw at C.
F is a break-roller attached to the ratchetwheel A and fastened on the same shaft G. This roller may be made ot' leather or vulcanized india-rubber.
E is a break-bar or lever attached to the pawl O by a pin at D. This break-bar or lever rests on the roller F, and when the ratchetwheel A revolves from the right to the left moves the break-bar to the lel't, ofcourse drawing the part D to the left, which lifts the point O from the wheel A. Reverse the motion, or attempt to do so, and-the bar E is moved to the right, dropping the point O on the wheel A, which catches in the ratchets and prevents the wheel A, and ot' course the shaft G, from revolving in that direction.
'By this invention a ratchet can be applied to any machine, which only rests on the ratchetwheel when it is required to do so, and thus prevents the noise of the pawl dragging on the ratchets-a matter very desirable in sewing"- maehines. The barE can be lifted on the pin H when desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
The pawl C, the lever or break-bar E, and break-roller F, when the same are constructed as described in the aforesaid combination, for the purposes set forth.
OBED GILDER.
