PLOW.
(No Model.)
No. 467,780. Patented Jan. 26, 1892' UNITED STATES ROBERT STE\VART I'IYER, OF GEORGETOIVN, TEXAS.
PATENT OFFICE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,780, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed August 18, 1890. Serial No. 382,321. (No model.)
To all whom, it may cmucrn:
Be it known that I, ROBERT STEWART IIYEE, of Georgetown, in the county of \Villiamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows, and more particularly to the means for securing the share to the plow; and it consists in a mold-board having a keeper for supporting the outer end of the share and against or within which a projection on the share rests. and a lever mounted on the keeper and adapted to engage the projection on the share and lock the share in place.
My invention further consists in means for locking the lever in place.
My invention further consists in certain details in the construction of the keeper and the devices for engaging the projection on the share, as will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of a plow embodying my invention. Figs. 2, 3, 4., 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are Views of modified constructions.
A represents a mold-board braced to the landside B in the usual manner, and O is an arm on the inner side of the landside, shaped to receive and support the combined share and point D.
In the drawings I have shown the brace 0 extended forward in front of the mold-board to form a seat for the upper rear edge of the share; but this is not essential, as this seat or keeper can be independent of the brace O, and be integral with or secured to the moldboard. This seat or keeper E, whether it be a part of the brace or an independent piece, projects in front of the mold-board A and forms a seat for the share, and is adapted to come in contact with a lug or projection a on the under side of the share D. The arm 0 is provided on one side with a stud 0, adapted, when the share is in position, to rest within the opening I) in the share D and assist the locking devices, to be hereinafter described, in holding the share against movement. The lug or projection a on the under board, and in all instances is held in place by a device movably secured to the under side of the keeper or mold-board. In Fig. 1 the keeper E, which extends forward of the moldboard, is provided with a slot 0, adapted to receive the undercut lug a on the share D. The share is placed in position by moving it laterally to enter the stud c in the opening Z) and the lug a in the slot 0', and is locked by the lever F, which in the present instance is provided with a bent finger f, adapted to close the slot 0' and engage the restricted neck of the lug a. To remove the share, it is simply necessary to turn the lever F to the left until the bent tinger f thereon clears the slot 0. In this instance the lever can be locked against movement by a ring 9, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9, or by pointing the end of the lever and bending it to engage the sockets h in the brace II, as shown in Fig. 2, or by providing the brace (or mold-board) with a rack-bar 2' in a position to engage a lip j on the lever F.
In Figs. 2 and 3- the seats or keepers, i11- stead of being provided with open slots, as
shown in Fig. 1, are provided with closedelongated slots 0, and in Fig: 3 the lever F, instead of being provided with a curved finger, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is itself curved in the are of a circle, which maybe eccentric or concentric with the axis of the lever.
In Figs. 5 and 7 the keepers E are also provided with closed elongated slots. In Fig. 7 the lever F is provided with a closed slot 7;, enlarged at one end, as at k, within which the lug a on the share rests. This slot may be eccentric or concentric with the axis of the lever, as desired. In Fig. 7 the share is locked by means of the eccentric-head Z engaging the restricted neck of lug a.
In Fig. 4 the keeper is provided with an open slot, the side walls of which are beveled, and the share D is provided with an elongated fiat projection a, correspondingly beveled to snugly fit within the open slot. The beveled walls prevent the upward and lateral movements of the share, the endwise movement be ing prevented by the lever F, which is provided with a bent end adapted to overlap the forward end of projection a.
In Fig. 6 the seat E, in addition to closed slot c,is provided with one or more projections 0 which latter are provided on the side adjacent to the slot with undercut or beveled edges. The lug a on the share D has its face adjacent to projections c beveled, and is locked in place by wedge F, which could be a removable brace extending back to the landside:
In Figs. 8 and 9 the keeper or seat E is provided with a hinged latch F having a shoulder f which, when the latch is turned down and looked, as shown in Fig. 5, securely holds the share in position.
In all the figures, except Fig. 6, the lever or corresponding part of the locking device is attached to the keeper. This is my preferred form ;;but it would operate equally well if attached to the mold-board.
' It is evident from the foregoing that the details of construction can be varied in many ways. Hence I do not limit myself to-the exact constructions shown and described, but
consider myself at liberty to make. such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a plow, the combination, with a moldboard, landside, and share, the latter having a projection on its under side, of a notched or slotted keeper or seat projecting forwardly from the mold-board, and a movable device carried by the mold-board and adapted to engage the projection on the under side of the share and lock the same Within the notch or slot is the keeper, substantially as set forth In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
