Description

(NOYMOd I V I v 0' SODESTROM.
ADJUSTABLE REEL FOR HARVESTERS. No. 467,625. Patented Jan. 26, 1892".
.UNITED STnT s PATENT OFFICE.
OLE SODESTROM, OF SAC CITY, IOWA.
ADJ U STABLE REEL FO R HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,625, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed September 16, 1891. Serlal No. 405,899. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLE SoDEsTRoM, a citinen of the United States, residing at Sac City, n the county of Sac and State of Iowa, have lnvented a new and useful Adjustable Reel for Harvesters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harvesters, and more especially to the reels used therein; and the object of the same is to provide means for heading the grain in such a manner that it will fall straight across the platform or with the head toward the grain-wheel side of the platform.
'llo this end the invention consists in providmg an adjustable connection between the reel-arms and reel-fans, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated on the sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a reel constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of parts slightly separated.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter O designates the operating-shaft for the reel. H is the hub thereon, and A are the arms diverging from said hub. Each arm is provided at its outer end with a casting 0, having one face T transversely curved.
F F are the fans of the reel, which, as shown, are preferably in two pieces with their inner ends lapping and slotted, as at s, and through these slots pass bolts 1), which connect their meeting ends with the rear flat face of a block S. The latter is provided with a recessed opposite or front face R, which is curved to correspond with the curvature of the rear face T of the casting which fits therein, and B is a connecting-bolt, which passes forwardly through the casting and through a horizontal slot II in the block, the head of said bolt movin g over curved seats Q, above and below said slot. With this construction it will be obvious that the bolt B can be loosened and the block S set at any desired transverse angle to the casting 0, thereby causing the fans to stand at an angle across the table of the machine, (not shown 5) but when the angle is very great ordinary fans would become too short, and hence I preferably make the fans in two pieces, as above stated, and connect them adj ustably by the bolts 11 with the block S, so that at such times they can be lengthened out in a manner which will be clear. A
reel constructed in this manner will be found I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction, nor to the size, materials, or exact shapes of parts, as considerable change may be made therein withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention. 7
I claim as the salient features of my invention- 1. In a harvester-reel, the combination, with the shaft, the radial arms, and the castings at the outer ends thereof having transverselycurved faces, of blocks each having a correspondingly-curved face and provided with a transverse slot with curved seats above and below at the opposite side thereof, abolt passing through said casting and slot, and a fan connected to the block, substantially as described.
2. In a harvester'reel, the combination, with the shaft, the radial arms, and the castings at the outer ends thereof having transverselycurved faces, of blocks each having a correspondingly-curved recess in one face and pro vided witha transverse slot with curved seats above'and below at the opposite side thereof, a bolt passing through said casting and slot, a fan in two members having longitudinally slotted and lapping inner ends, and bolts passing through said slots and the block, substantially as described.
3. In a harvester-reel, the combination, with the shaft, the radial arms, the blocks, and means, substantially as described, for con necting each block to its arm and permitting its adjustment in a plane at right angles to the diameter of the reel, of afan in two members having longitudinaily-slotted and lapping inner ends, and bolts passing through said slots and the block, substantially as (l6:
scribed.
4:. In a harvester-reel, the combination, with length of the fans, as and for the purpose herethe shaft, the radial arms, and the castings at inbefore set forth. the outer ends thereof having transversely- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as curved faces, of blocks each having a corremy own I have hereto affixed my signature in 5 spondingly-curved recess in one face and prothe presence of two Witnesses.
vided with a transverse slot With curved seats 1 1 i above and below at the opposite side thereof, OLE SODES'l a bolt passing through said casting and slot, Witnesses: fans connected with each block, and means, W. JAoKsoN,
IO- substantially as described, for adjusting the S. E. WILHELM.
