Description
H. MISHLER. POTTBRS 001,.
(N0 Model.)
No. 467,609. Patented Jan. 26, 1892.

F F 2 E B a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY MISHLER, OF MOGADORE, OHIO.
POTTERS TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,609, dated January 26, 1892.
Application filed August 29, 1891 $e1'ial No. 404,130. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MISHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mogadore, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Potters Use; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tools for potters use; and it has for its object to provide a tool of improved construction for use in forming the inside of earthenware articles.
To this end and to such others as the invention maypertain the same consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a potters forming-tool, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter,A designates a shaft, upon one end of which is loosely sleeved a roller B. The extreme lower end of the shaft is provided with an enlargement A, which is seated within a corresponding recess 13 in the roller, while a eap'O, fitted over the end of the roller, prevents the roller from being slipped off from the shaft accidentally. A covering of cloth D, made in the form of a sack of proper size, is drawn over the roller and is held in place by means of a binding cord or strap E, passed around the entrance of the bag at the upper end of the roller, and the bag entrance is thus bound securely within an annular groove F, formed in the face of the roller near its end.
The tool is intended for use in forming the inside of earthenware articles while the clay is being rotated upon the potters wheel, the operation consisting merely in holding the tool in such a position as to bring the outer face of the roller into contact with the clay, when the roller will be rotated by frictional contact with the clay, thus forcing the same outward against the inner face of the mold. The cloth surface of the roller will effectually prevent the roller from adhering to the clay.
The tool may be furnished with a suitable handle and thus employed as a hand-tool, or it may be so arranged with reference to the potters wheel that the end of the shaft A may be secured to some fixed portion of the frame.
\Vhile I have shown the roller as in the form of an ordinary cylinder having straight sides, it is at once evident that the form orsize of the roller may be varied as the nature of the work may require.
The cloth covering of the roller may be quickly and readily removed or changed, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, isit 1. A tool for use in forming the inside walls of earthenware articles, the same comprising a roller loosely sleeved upon a fixed shank, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. A potters tool consisting of a roller loosely sleeved upon a fixed shaft, the outer face ofthe roller being provided with a covering of cloth or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY MISHLER.
\Vitnesses:
G. W. BENNAGE, SCOTT MIsHLER.
