F. X. GARTLAND. APPARATUS FOR FUNERALADEGORATION.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS X. GARTLAND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR FUNERAL DECORATION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,405, dated January 19, 1892.
Application filed July 16, 1891. Serial No. 399,766. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS X. GARTLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Funeral Decoration, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in funeral decorations, and has for its object apparatus or devices adapted to be used at different times and places in connection with the services for the dead, and is of such character as to be impressive and add to the solemnity of the occasion; and for this purpose itconsists, first, of apparatus for funeral decoration, substantially as described, adapted to be either readily put together or detached, as desired, for convenience in use or packing and transportation.
It further consists ofthe combination of parts hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the devices in proper place, as embodied in my invention. Fig. 9 represents an end view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the boxes employed. Fig. 4t represents a side view of a portion of one of the standards. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a frame or cross-piece for supporting suitable lights for illuminating purposes. Fig. 6 represents a side view of the upper end of one of the standards of the de vice. Fig. 7 represents an enlarged view in perspective of the upper end of one of said standards. Fig. 8 representsa perspective view of a screen employed in the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates standards or uprights adapted to be secured to the sides of a box B, so as to be readily detached therefrom. At the tops of said standards and supported in recesses C thereof is a frame or cross-bar D. The ends of said bar are of preferably dovetail shape, and the said recesses correspond thereto, so that when the bar is placed therein the upper ends of the standards are prevented from being moved away from each other. To each of the stand ards are secured the eyes E, which serve as guides for the rods F, vertically movable therein. The screws G in said eyes and bearing against said rods clamp the latter in the desired position. A curtain rod or support His secured to the upper end of the rods F, hav ing the curtains J depending therefrom.
Supported on the box B is an electric battery K, connected with the wires L, which extend along the standards and the cross-bar D to the lights M, the latter being arranged so as to be in the rear of a transparent picture N, representing some biblical scene or character, fitting the solemn ceremony of the intermentof the dead. The picture N is mounted or supported on a stand P, having on its front carved or other artistically-formed devices appropriate to the occasion. The curtains J are looped or draped on both sides of the picture and stand. Secured to the arms Q are the burners or lights R, so as to light the apartment in front of the curtains and picture.
It will be apparent that by the employment of decorations or devices as herein described an increased solemnity will be added to the funeral ceremonies.
The devices as described can be readily put together or taken apart, so as to be adapted for use in different apartments and at different times.
By placing the battery K on the boX B it serves as a counter-balance to the standards A and rods F, preventing the upsetting of the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Apparatus for funeral decoration, consisting of illuminated pictures, supports therefor, and draperies, said supports being in detachable parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Apparatus for funeral decoration, consisting of standards with a brace-bar, vertically-adj ustable rods, a cross-bar on said rods with curtains thereon, and an illuminated picture on said brace-bar, said parts being combined substantially as described.
3. Apparatus for funeral decoration, consisting of a support, uprights or standards with a brace-bar connected therewith, rods adj ustable on said standards and provided with a cross-bar having curtains depending therefrom, lights on said brace-bar, and a picture adapted to be illuminated by said lights and having a suitable support, said parts being combined substantially as described.
4:- Apparatus for funeral decoration, consisting of boxes forming supports, standards detachably connected to said boxes, a counter-balance for said standards on said boxes, adjustable rods connected with said standards, curtains on a cross-bar on said rods, and an illuminated picture, said parts being combined substantially as described.
5. Apparatus for funeral decoration, consisting of a supporting-box, side standards with a brace-bar, vertically-adjustable rods carrying a cross-bar, draped curtains secured to said cross-bar, a stationary transparent picture suitably supported, and lights secured on said brace-bar and behind said picture, said standards beingadapted to be detachably secured to said supporting-box, said parts being combined substantially as described.
