UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREEBORN F. RAYMOND, 2D, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMB NAIL-STRIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,237, dated January 19, 1892.
Application iiled May 15, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, vlREEBoEN F. RAYMOND, 2d, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Comb-Strips of I-Ieel- Nails, of which the following is a full, clear,
ing of varying lengths.
a is the comb-strip. It has formed to project from the connecting section or margin a as many nails c as it is desired to feed to the heel-attaching machine and no more. For instance, if nine nails are needed for properly attaching the heel-blank, then the comb-strip has but nine nails. If fifteen are necessary, then the comb-strip has fteen, and so on. Of course the strip may have any number necesessary for the heel which its nails are to attach. The nails as supported by the comb are of varying lengths, and this may be also pro duced by forming the strip as shown in Fig. 3, so that the uncut margin describes a curve; or the uncut margin may be straight and the shanks of the nails extend therefrom of varying lengths, as represented in Figs. 1 and 2. The nails also may be of varying size to fit them for the especial location which they are to bear in the heel, as it is desirable that cer- Serial No. 165,574. (No model.)
tain nails for attaching the heel be larger or longer, or both, and possess greater Wearing properties than others.
In use the comb-strip having the requisite number of nails and of the requisite size and length is placed in the machine, and by the operation thereof it is separated into its individual nails, which are fed to the driving devices and driven. Itis obvious that this strip not only provides means for easy and quick feeding of a large number of nails, but that it also provides means for the feeding of nails of differentlengths and sizes in a quick and expeditious way, and also for properly locating such nails so that all the nails are fed to the place where needed, whether they be long, short, stout, or slender.
While I have described this invention as applicable to heel-nails, I would not be understood as limiting it to this class of fastenings, as it may also be used for fastening soles or any other article or thing where it' is necessary to feed the nails or fastenings expeditiously, and to arrange for the driving of a given number, and to provide nails or fastenings of varying lengths and sizes adapted to be driven in special or prearranged places.
Having thus fullydescribed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A comb-strip 0f heel-nails, composed of a predetermined number of starts increasing in length from the ends of the strip entire toward the center thereof, connected by a top web adapted to be cut to separate the nails or starts for individual driving, substantially as described.
