Description

(No Model.)
J. BALLARD. FINISHING OF HOUSE INTERIORS.
Patented Jan. 12 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BALLARD, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
FINISHING OF HOUSE-INTERIORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,897, dated. January 12, 1892.
Serial No. 349,575- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES BALLARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finish for House- Interiors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the finishing of houseinteriors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates'to that class of finish for house-interiors which is made of hard wood and Where perfectly smooth surfaces are desired, but may be used with any finish, and has for its object theimprovement in the application of such finish. Its novelty will be herein set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.- v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a complete door-frame as applied to the Wall-opening. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view showing the fastening device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional View of the fastening means attached to the studding and door-jamb. Fig. 4 is a detail View of a looped plate and lug,'which is one of the forms of fastening means in my improvement. Fig. 5 is also a detail view of the loop and lug.
In Fig. 1, F E are moldings applied perpendicularly to the Wall-opening. O is also a molding. M M are door jambs. Z is a head-block, and Z shows in dotted lines the position of a headblock. G G are plinthblocks. 15 t are base-boards. A is a looped strap. D (1 refer to the respective parts of a lug which is purposed to engage with the looped strap and secure the facing or finish in the position desired. B is a looped plate, and O is the inside facing at the top of the door. L L are studdings.
In Fig. 2, A is a looped strap provided with two raised portions and with corresponding depressions, and further provided with screwholes on either side of the respective raised portions, and with the looped strap larger at the end, (designated by K.)
In Fig. 3, L is the studding. M is the jamb, I a lath, and Athelooped strap, screwed upon or otherwise fastened to the jamb-lath and studding. P P are loop-holes in the looped strap A. T T are raised points.
In Fig. 4, B is a looped plate. J is a raised portion or loop in the plate. D d are the respective parts of a lug engaging the loop in the plate B, and T is a raised point.
In the application of my improvement it will be seen that the looped strap and the plate provided with the loop .are adjusted at different points on the joist and lath about the wall-opening; and, further, it will be seen that wherever the looped strap A is applied the enlarged end is always attached to the doorj amb or inside facing of the frame, and in the location and securing of this looped strap the plastering or wood about the opening is gouged away until the looped strap can be embedded in such a manner that the highest point of the raised portions (designated by T) bears slightly above the surface of the plastering and slightly above the edge of the jamb or the inside facing, as is shown in Fig. 3, the dotted lines being used to show the surface of the plastering. This figure shows the jamb dug out or cut away in such a manner as to form a bearing for the enlarged ends of the looped strap A.
When itis desired to adjust the molding or any part of the finish in position by placing the desired piece in its proper position and over the looped straps or plates provided with the raised points and pressing it against the points on said straps and plates, the marks made by the points indicate the exact position that the lugs will occupy upon the under surface of the finish, and they being so located the engaging lug is forced into the loop-holes of thelooped straps or looped plates, thus firmly securing the finish in the desired position. The plinth-blocks are attached in the same manner by using either the looped plate or the looped strap, the looped plates being embedded in the same manner as the looped straps. Either form of engaging loops may be used and is used, according to the advantage gained.
It will be understood that the above-described loops and engaging device may be used in connection with and as a fastening means for any part of the inside finish for houses, as with the molding base-board, the jambs, head and plinth blocks, stop-stools and aprons, or any part of the finish.
It is Well known amongarchitects, contractors, builders, and carpenters in general that where nails or screws are required to be.
used as a fastening means of the interior of the houses it is a difficult matter to put on the finish without marring the surface of the same and it is impossible to put on such finish without the nail-holes appearingin the surface in which they are driven, as putty,
paint, or varnish will not conceal the places.
where they are driven. By means of myimproved fastening means an inside finish is provided with perfectly smooth surfaces, with nothing appearing to mar or injure its ap pearance, and is held in position as firmly as though nails or screws were used to secure the same, and the finish may be detached from the Wall-opening or from any position or place where it may be fastened by merely detaching the engaging lugs from the lugs in the looped straps or plates. be seen that there is an advantage in the use of my improved fastening means in connection with the adjustments of the various parts of the finish, inasmuch as nails and screws are dispensed with and perfectly smooth surfaces are obtained.
It will therefore Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the finish for houseinteriors, the looped strap A, provided with loops P P and having the enlarged end K, and the raised points T T, and the lugs D D to engage the looped strap A, all substantially as described and set forth.
2. As a securing or fastening means for interior of houses, the looped strap A, having suitable screw holes and with the enlarged ends and provided with the loops P P and the points T T, with the lug having the respective parts D cl to engage the loop strap A, in combination, substantially as described and set forth.
3. In combination with finish for house-interiors, the loop-strap A,with the enlarged end K and having suitable screw-holes provided with'the loops P P and the points T T, and the looped plate B, having suitable screw-holes provided with the loop J and the point T,-
the lugs having the respective parts D d to engage the looped strap A and the looped
