FASTENING FOR SHOES, 850.

A mragfar Wanna/Hawks UNITED STATES IVILLIAM F. DONOHOE, OF
ONE-IIALF PATENT OFFICE.
PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TO EDMUND R. SPRINGMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENING FOR SHOES, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,738, dated January 5, 1892. Application filed July 15, 1889. Serial No. 317,508. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DONOHOE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Shoes, Gloves, 850., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved blank to for the base-plate of a lever-fastening for shoes, gloves, or similar articles; and it consists of an oblong plate of sheet metal with lateral lugs perforated and adapted to be bent up to form bearings for the lever, perforated I 5 lateral arms at one end, perforations for the attaching devices at the opposite end, and an integral spring-tongue struck from the body of the plate, as more fully set forth, and then definitely claimed hereinafter.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a shoe-fastening in which the baseplate or attaching member is formed from my improved blank. Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank with the side lugs turned into a vertical position. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinal section of the same with the lever or fastening mounted. Fig. 5 is a plan of the blank before the side lugs are bent upward. Fig. 6 is a view of the lever or fastening provided with side pivots. Fig. 7 is a View of a shoe to which are attached fastenings provided with base members made from my improved blanks.
The blank 1 for the base-plate or attaching member may be made of steel, brass, or other sheet metal, preferably having the thickness of No. 23 standard wire-gauze, but sufficiently elastic or flexible to conform to the 4.0 surface to which it is attached. In form the base-plate blank 1 is oblong with lateral lugs or projections 2 near one end, as shown in Fig. 5. This blank is provided at one end with lateral perforated ears 3 3 and at the 5 opposite end with perforations 3 3, whereby the base-plate may be firmly stitched and secured in the desired position to the shoe or other fabric. By employing threads to secure the plate or attaching member 1 in its desired position at both ends the abrading action of prongs or rivets is avoided. In the center of the blank 1 is a longitudinal slot 4.
the same time the lugs 2 may be provided with perforations (3 to receive the journals or pivots 7 of the lever or fastening 8, which is adapted to engage an eyelet 9 on the part to be fastened. After the base-plate blank has been properly formed the perforated lugs g 2 are bent in a vertical direction and the side pivots 7 of the bent or curved lever 8 are ongaged in said lugs, thereby completing the fastening device.
As shown in Fig. 7, the fastening devices are attached to the shoe or other article by stitching passed through the perforations in the ends of the base-plate, which is a more satisfactory and durable means of attachment and less expensive than rivets. The prongs or rivets sometimes employed for attaching fastening devices to shoes are liable to exert a rubbing and wearing action on hosiery and are in many respects less desirable than a fastening of strong thread. Both ends of the base-plate blank being securely stitched to the shoe-upper or other fabric, as shown, the fastening device will be firmly held in place without liability of being torn off and Without causing wear of the hosiery for exerting pressure on the foot even when the shoe is close-fitting.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- A blank for the base-plate of a lever-fastening, consisting of an oblong plate of sheet metal with lateral lugs 2 2, perforated and adapted to be bent up to form bearings for the lever, perforated lateral ears 3 3 at one end, perforations for the attaching devices at the opposite end, and an integral springtongue 5 struck from the body of the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM F. DONOHOE. Witnesses:
PERCY B. HILLS, JAMES A. RUTHERFORD.
