CORSET STAY. No. 466,461. Patented Jan. 5-, 1892.

-UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES FERRIS JOSEPH GUNNING, OF TORONTO, CANADA.
CORSET-STAY.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,461, dated tTanuary 5, 1892.
Application filed August 1, 1889. Serial No- 319,481. (No model) Patented in Canada January 16, 1889, No. 30,573.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES FERRIS JOSEPH GUNNING, formerly of New Haven, Connecticut, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and at present residing at 45 High Street, in the city of Toronto, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset Stays, (for which I obtained a patent in Oan ada, No. 30,573, 'dated January 16, 1889,) of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to corset-stays, and particularly to that class of stays which are designed to be inserted in pockets previously sewed in the corset-body.
It has for its object to provide a stay that will be both flexible and durable. To attain this object I make my stay of thin strips of bamboo or cane, as will hereinafter fully be described in the specification and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure represents an elevation of the stay.
The stay is made of two strips of split bamboo or canea long piece A and a short piece A. The long strip is bent upon itself a short distance from its ends, forming thereby the loops a a; The space between the ends of the long strip is filled by the short strip, thus making a uniform stay of the same thickness throughout its whole length. The outside or skin part of split or stripped cane is smooth and has a polish, while the inside is more or less rough, and if attempt were made to insert it in apocket-a strip with the rough 3 5 side next to the materialthe rough face would catch and prevent the entrance of the strip. To avoid this difficulty I bend the strips in such a manner that the outside or skin part of the cane will be on the outside, so that 40 when introduced in the pockets the smooth side of the cane will be next to the Walls of the pocket. By so placing the stiffeners the wearer of the corset can bend the body easily,
as the smooth skin of the cane will slide easily on the Walls of the pocket, and the ends of the stifl'eners being rounded will not project through the ends of the pockets. Furthermore, the strips can be made very thin, thereby making the corset very flexible.
What I claim as new is- A stay formed of a long and a short strip of bamboo, the longer strip having part of itself at each end bent upon a line substantially parallel with itself to form rounded ends for the stay, the shortstrip filling the space between the extreme ends of the longer piece, and the cuticle of both pieces or strips being upon the outside.
