I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
] ROBERT COLE, OF SHELBY, MICHIGAN.
SAND-BAND. V
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,66,326, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed September 10, 1891- Serial No. 405.310. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Come, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, in the county of- Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Sand-Band, of which the followingis a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in sand-bands for vehicle-wheels.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive sand-band which may be readily attached to the axle of a vehicle, which may be readily adjusted to suit the same, and which willbe capable of shielding the wheel-hub from dust and dirt.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and out in the claim hereto appended.-
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a sand-band constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the support or stiffener. I
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a'disk having a central opening 2 to receive an axle 3, and having secured to its peripherya flange e, designed to project over the inner end of a hub and to extend around the top and sides of the same to ex clude dust and dirt from the axle-box. The disk 1 and the flange 4 are constructed of flexible material, preferably leather, and are sewed together, and are supported and braced by a stiffener or supporting-frame 5, arranged within the sand-band. By constructing the sand-band of flexible material it will not, when in'contact with the hub, make a noise similar to that made bya wheel when in need of greasing.
pointed The device is attached to an axle by means of a cord or wire 9,and is secured in openings or perforations 10 of the disk 1. The sandband by being constructed of flexible material may have the opening of the diskl readily enlarged to accommodate a large axle, and the plate of the supporting frameor stiffener may be easily cut or bent aside, if necessary or desirable.
It will be seen that the device is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and may be readily attached to an axle.
What I claim is- Asand-band comprisinga flexible disk having a central opening, a flexible band secured to the disk, a supporting-frame adapted to stiffen the sand-band and arranged within and secured to the same and consisting of a segmental plate provided witha recess conforming to the opening of the disk, and a flange extending from the curved edge or periphery of the plate and. arranged adjacent the flexible flange or band, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' ROBERT COLE.
