FRED S. PINKHAM, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
.DOOR-GRAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,054, dated December 29, 1891.
Application led September 16, 1891. Serial No. 405,881. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be ,it known that I, FRED S. PINKHAM, of Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvement in Door-Grape, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representin g like parts.
Door-crapes as now commonly made are secured to a door or bell knob by means of a string or cord.
This invention has forits object to provide a door-crape with a supporting-frame by which it may be readily attached or secured to a knob or projection without the aid of a string or cord or other auxiliary fastening.
My invention consists in the combination, with a doorcrape, of a supporting-frame therefor, construct-ed and arranged to be readily attached to a knob or other projection.
My invention also consists in various details of construction of the supporting-frame, to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l represents a door-crape embodying this invention as it will appear when attached to a door or bell knob; Fig. 2, a rear side view of the attaching-plate; Fig. 3, a cross-section taken on the dotted line :c fc, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the door-crape A, which may be of any desired shape or inaterial, is fastened to or carried by a supporting-frame, herein shown as consisting of a front plate a, preferably made of spring metal, so that it may be bent orcnrved byhand, and a holder b, provided with ears b at opposite edges, which receive between them the front plate a, the resiliency of the metal of which the front plate is made tending to straighten it and thereby cause it to hold itself in position between said ears. The holder b may be provided with any suitable appliance for its ready attachment to the door or bell knob or other projection at hand 5 but for simplicity I have herein provided said holder with an inverted-V-shaped recess b3, adapted to receive any projection, as the door-knob represented in the drawings.
In applying my improved door-crape the door or bell knob is preferably drawn ont slightly and the holder b placed with its V- shaped recess straddling the shank of the knob, when the knob will be pressed in as far as possible, so that the larger orouter portion of the knob will contact with the face of the holder to better support the latter in position. The holder now being in position, as represented in Fig. 3, the front plate a, carrying .the crape, is grasped by the hand and bent or compressed transversely, so that its edges will be drawn together sufficiently to permit the plate to be placed between the ears b on the holder b, when the said plate is released and its own spring or resiliency' causing it to immediately expand transversely until it shall be firmly held by and between the ears, as shown in Fig. 3.
The crape may be readily removed by grasping the front plate a with the hand and compressing it transversely, thereby releasing it from its engagement with the ears b', after which the holder b may be lifted off, although both may be removed or applied together, if
desired, in which case' both the front plate and holder may be made in one piece. I prefer, however, the construction which comprehends a supporting-frame comprising two detachable members, as it may be applied more conveniently.
In cases where there is no knob to which the holder may be applied a small tack or nail may be driven into the door-post to enter the V-shaped recess, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and it is also evident that the holder may be provided with any suitable fastening or appliance to adapt it for appli cation to any form of knob or projection.
In practice the holder b will be cutaway at b2 between the ears, as represented in Fig. 2, so that the lingers may not strike the edges of the holder when the front plate is being applied. y
In applying the crape to the front plate a the frame is or may be covered with cloth, leather, or other suitable material, to which the crape is attached. To prevent this'covering from stretching straight across from edge to edge of the frame a when the latter is bent, I provide a plate c, which is clamped to the inside of the plate ct by a bolt c', with the covering material between it and the plate, the plate c keeping the covering in contact with the plate a in whatever shape the latter may be bent.
IOO
It is not intended to limit this invention to the particular V-shaped recess shown, as the' recess may be shaped to it various projections-as, for instance, such as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2, a recess of such shape being adapted for application to an electricbell push-button and like projections.
This invention is not limited to the particular shape or construction of the parts herein shown and described, as the same may be varied without departing from the scope or spirit of this invention.
I claiml. A door-Grape and a supporting-frame therefor provided with means by which it may be attached to aknob or projection, substantially as described.
2. A door-crape and a supporting-frame therefor having a recess with converging side Walls, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A door-Grape and a supporting-frame therefor comprising a snpportingplate and a holder to which it is detachably connected, substantially as described.
i. A door-crape and a supporting-frame therefor consisting of a resilient plate and holder having ears between which the said plate is sprung, snbstanti ally as described.
5. A door-Grape and a supporting-frame therefor consisting of a front plate a, holder b, having ears b', and a recess b2, substantially as described.
6. The flexible plate a and a covering therefor, to which a door-crape is attached, combined with a plate c, bolt c', and the holder b, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED S. PINKHAM.
