Description
E; 0. TEOKTONIUS. HOOP FOR WOODEN BARRELS.
No. 465,954. Patented Dec. 29, 1891.
lll llig NITED STATES EMIL C. TEOKTONIUS, OF RAOINE, \VISCONSIN.
HOOP FOR WOODEN BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,954,. dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed April 23, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL O. TECKTONIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Band-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relatesto improvements in band-fasteners; and the objects of the invention are, first, to provide a simple, cheap, and efiicient device for securing bands or hoops around casks, tanks, and other vessels without employing rivets or similar fastening means; secondly, to provide for the easy removal of an old or defective band, as well as for the adjustment of the band which is rendered necessary by shrinking or expanding of the vessel around which it is secured, and finally to provide a fastener which will not become displaced laterally away from the vessel when the band is fastened around the same.
Vith these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with a band, of two plates or castings, each provided with a base and a chamber or socket at one end, clamping-plates fitted in said sockets and arranged to confine the ends of the band between themselves and the castings or plates, and means for adjusting the plates or castings, which means preferably consist of a threaded coupling rod or bolt passing through suitable apertures or passages in the castings and the clamping-plates and nuts fitted on said bolt and bearing on plates or castings.
My invention also consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out and claimed.
To enable others to more readily understand my invention, I have illustrated the same in v the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a horizontal sectional view through a vessel having my improvements attached thereto Fig. 11 is a sectional view through one of the plates or castings and its associated clamping-plate. Fig. III is a de Serial No. 3 90,18 6. (No model.)
tail plan view of the base-plate with the clam ping-plate and band in position, and Fig. IV is a detail perspective view of the clamping-plate.
Like letters of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings, referring to which A A designate the base plates or castings of my improved band-fastener, (shown in position on a vessel B in Fig. I.) Each of the base plates or castings A A has a broad flat bottom'a and an upwardly-projecting lug a at one end. Each base-casting is also provided with a socket or chamber 1), which opens through the front thereof, and the bottom wall of this chamber b is inclined slightly, as shown in Fig. I. The top of the chamber is less width than the bottom, so that longitudinal ways 0 are formed in the sides of the socket or chamber, which serve to guide the clamping-plate D. Within the chamber b of the base-castings A A extend the ends of the band C, which, as shown in Fig. I, has its ends bent to form hooks cl. In said chambers 'or sockets of thebase-castings are fitted clamping-plates D, which conform in crosssection to the shape of the chamber, and these plates D bear against the ends of the band and force the same against the inclined rear walls of the sockets in the base-castings.
E designates a threaded coupling bolt or rod, which passes through suitable passages 01 in the clamping-plates, which are confined within the lugs and sockets of the base-castings, and said rod rests in curved seats 9, formed in the upper surfaces of the base-castings A A. On the threaded-boltE are fitted nuts F F, Which bear against the outer faces of the clamping-plates to keep said plates within the base-plates and maintain the parts in the desired positions.
The operation of my invention may be briefly stated as follows: The ends of the band arefitted in the sockets or chambers b, and the clamping-plates D are then placed in said sockets to engage the hook-shaped ends of the band. The two clamping-plates are then connected by the threaded bolt or rod E, and the nuts F F are screwed on the'rod until the band is tightly fastened between the 7 plates D and the base-plates A A, the hooks of the band being between the inner faces of the clamping-plates and the rear walls of the chambers Z). toward each other by screwing up the nuts, or they may recede by unscrewing the nuts, as it may be desired, to tighten or loosen the band, the nuts F F bearing against the clamping-plates and keeping such plates in proper position. By forming the castings A A with projecting bases and securing the ends of the band therein the castings are prevented from pulling away from the vessel, as the tendency of the band is to tightly hug the vessel and overcome the opposite strain of the coupling-rod, which is to draw the castings away from the vessel, owing to the rod being above the band.
I am aware that changes in the form and proportion of parts and details of construction can be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention-as, for instance, though I have described my fastener in use in connection with a band having its ends provided with hooks, it is obvious that it can be used with equal effect to fasten the ends of the ordinaryshaped bandand I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention. I also contemplate fluting or eorrugating the lower surface of the band to insure a firmer hold onthe base of the casting.
Although I have shown the rear wall of the socket or chamber as being inclined to the bottom, yet I do not restrict myself to this particular shape, as the rear wall may be vertical.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a band, of the base plates or castings, each provided with The castings A A are forced an interior socket formed by the base, sides, and top of the casting and adapted to reeelve the ends of the band, the clamping-plates fitted in said sockets and operating to confine the band tightly between themselves and one of the walls of the sockets, and a coupling device between said clamping-plates, substantiall y as shown and described.
2. The combination of the base-plates provided with the interior sockets which are open at the rear ends, the band having its ends bent upward and fitted in said sockets of the castings, the clamping plates fitted 1n the sockets and operating to hold the upturned ends of the band against the rear walls of the sockets, and a single bolt connecting the clamping-plates, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a band, of the plates or castings, each provided with an internal socket which opens through the rear thereof, the end walls of each socket being inclined to form an obtuse angle with the bottom thereof, the clamping-plates titted snugly in the sockets and confining the band be tween themselves and the end walls and hottoms of the sockets, a single bolt connecting the clamping-plates, and nuts fitted on said bolts and bearing against the outer faces of the bearing-plates, whereby the plates can be forced into the sockets in the castings and the latter adjusted relatively to each other by manipulating a single nut on the bolt, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL O. TECKTONIUS.
