UNITED STATES PATIENT. OFFICE.
GEORGE JOSEPH OARTWRIGHT, OF SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WVALES.
BOILER AND BO|LER-FURNACE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,831, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed March 28, 1890.
T aZZ whom it may concern- Be it known that I, GEORGE JOSEPH CART- WRIGHT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Sydney, in the Colony of New South Wales, have in vented certain Improvements in Boilers and Boiler-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is applicable to almost any kind of boiler; but in order that the improve ments may be understood, I shall describe them as applied to a Cornish tubular boiler.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a view of the boiler, half in front elevation and half in cross-section taken on the line 1 2 of Fig. 1.
The boiler shown in the drawings is of the Cornish tubular pattern fitted with my special apparatus for the more perfect combustion of the fuel.
A is the boiler.
13 is the fire tube or flue.
O is the bridge that contains an air-passage D, the entrance to which beneath the fire-bars E of the furnace F is governed by .a damper G, that is operated from the front of the boiler by the rod and handle H. The exitopening of the air-passage D is placed behind the bridge 0 and is slightly overhung, in order to prevent any ashes or soot from falling into the cavity D. An auxiliary air supply is admitted (via the ash-pit F) to the combustionchamber J, behind the bridge 0, through the air-passage D, the supply of air being regulated by the falling door K in front of the boiler and the damper G at the bridge 0. On arriving at the end of the coinbustionchamber J the products of combustion will enter an uptake-chamber L, placed at the end of'the boiler, and will then pass upward and enter return fire-tubes a a a d in the boiler. On
arriving again at the front of the boiler such of the gases, smoke, &c., as have passed through theupper return-tubes a a will enter a chamber M, attached to the front of the boiler, and will be conveyed thence direct to the uptake or funnel, while those gases, smoke, the, that have passed through the Serial no. 345.629. (No mam.)
lower return-tubes a a will be prevented from rising in the chamber M by an adjustable horizontal baffle-plate N, that divides the chamber M into two parts. The baffleplate N is so placed as to have the efiect of returning the last-mentioned gases into the mouth of the furnace F, through the opening m. The baffle-plate Nis made adjustable, so that one, two, or three tiers or rows of the return fire-tubes may be cut off from the uptake and the gases, &c., conveyed along them be returned into the mouth of the furnace. The baffle-plate M consists merely of a plate of iron supported in grooves n n. The openings in the front of the chamber M, through Which the baffle-plate is introduced, may be closed in any suitable manner. The means adopted in the drawings consists of an ordinary flap. The particular function of the baffle-plate N is to insure that a smaller or larger quantity of the partially or wholly unconsumed gases or smoke shall be returned into the furnace, and that the amount of draft shall be regulated. By the admission of a supply of fresh air to the combustionchamber J through the passage D a more per-.
fect combustion of the gaseous products, smoke, &c., that pass away free or only partially consumed from the furnace or fire'box is effected.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed. I declare that what I claim is-- The combination of the furnace, the uptakechamber M, and the return fire-tubes, said uptake-chamber being provided with a series of grooves n, forming supports therefor, an
adj ustable horizontal baffle-plate N, and openings through which said plate may be adjusted, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE JOSEPH GARTWRIGHI.
