' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN ll. KING, OF \VESTTROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FAYETTE B. DURANT, OF SAME ,PLAOE.
TRAP FOR WASTE-WATER PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ZPatent No. 465,820, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed September 11, 1891. Serial No. 405,383. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KING, of \Vest Troy, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Traps for Waste-Water Pipes, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, of one form of my trap. Fig. 2 is a like section of a preferred form of my trap, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of Fig. 2 at the line X X.
My invention relates to improvements in waste-water traps for sinks, washbasins, bathtubs, and other similar appliances which are provided with waste-water pipes having communication with a drain or sewer; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective trap from which the water cannot be drawn by the siphoning action of a To attain this object my trap consists of an inletpipe which communicates with a lower U- shaped bend, from which extend upwardly two vertical pipes or tubular passages, each having about the same area of the inlet-pipe. Said pipes or tubular passages form a communication with an in'verted-U-shaped bend, which forms a communication with an outletpipe, through which the waste water is discharged.
As illustrated in the drawings, A designates the inlet-pipe of my trap, which is designed to be connected to the waste-pipe of the sink or other appliance by means of a coupling 1 or other suitable means of forming such a connection. Said inlet-pipe communicates directly with a U-shaped bend B which forms the lower portion of said trap, and which is preferably provided with an opening 2 at its lower point, for the purpose of emptying and cleansing the trap. Said opening is provided with a stopper 3, which forms a water-tight closure therefor. Leading from the upper side of the bend B there are two pipes or tubular passages O and D, each of which should have about the same area as the pipe A. Said pipes form an open communication with an inverted-U-shaped bend E, which forms the upper portion of the trap. The pipe 0, which leads from the middle of the lower bend B, connects with one limb of the bend E, and the pipe D leads from the inner limb of the U-shaped bend B to the middle of the U-shaped bend E. From the outer limb of the latter a pendent outlet-pipe F is formed, and said pipe is provided with a coupling 1 or other means for forminga connection with 6o a waste-pipe leading directly to the drain or sewer; or said waste-pipe may form a portion of system of waste-pipes which lead into a drain or sewer.
The pipes A, C, D, and F and the bends B and E are preferably made integral; but they may be made separately and connected together with properly-formed joints.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A trap for waste-water pipes, consisting of an inlet-pipe connected to one limb of alower U-shaped bend, whose opposite limb and intermediate curved portion are each provided with a vertical tubular passage whose caliber 7 5 is equal to that of said inlet-pipe, and an inverted-U-shaped bend which forms the upper portion of said trap, one limb and the inter mediate curved portion of said inverted bend being separately connected to said vertical 8c tubular passages and the opposite limb of said inverted bend communicating directly with an outlet-pipe, as and for the purpose herein specified.
