1 I 5 pelled by means of spreading the wires on UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. XVEAVER, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE BARR CASH AND PACKAGE CARRIER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
' CASH AND PACKAGE CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,687, dated December 22, 1891.
Application filed April 13, 1891.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of 5 Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash and Package Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cash and package carriers, and more particularly to that class in Whichthe car is prowhich it is located. Much difficulty is met within this class of devices in keeping the movable wire taut and at the same time allowing it to move in spreading the wires with little friction on the bearings or trackway which subtends it.
It is the object of my present invention to overcome these defects and to so construct the devices for spreading the wires that the movable wire will be kept taut and at the same time allow it to move in spreading with but little friction on the bearings or trackway which subtends it.
\Vith this object in view the invention consists in the combination, with a hanger or bracket and a permanent wire secured thereto, of a frame, rods or bars pivotally connected at one end to said frame and at their other ends to the bracket or hanger, a mov- 5 able wire attached to said frame by a loose connection, and means for operating said pivoted frame to raise the movable wire.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a hanger or bracket and a per- 0 manent wire secured thereto, of aframe, rods or bars pivotally connected at one end to the frame and at their other ends to abracket or hanger, an arm pivoted to said frame, a movable wire connected to said arm, and means 5 for operating said frame to raise the movable wire.
The invention also consists in the combination, with a bracket or hanger and a per-= fierial No. 388,654. (No model.)
manent or fixed wire secured thereto, of a triangular frame, arms or rods pivotally connected at one end to the larger end of said frame and at their other ends to the bracket or hanger, an arm pivotally connected to the apex of said triangular frame, a wire secured to said pivoted arm, and means for op- 5 5 crating said frame to raise the movable wire; and the invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of a modification. Fig. 3 illus trates one form of a yielding attachment for the movable track-Wire. A represents a bracket or hanger, which may be supported in any suitable manner. The lower portion of the hanger A is preferably made in the form of an open frame 0, in the ends of which arms or rods 1 2 are pivotally. connected. The arms 1 2 are of equal lengths and are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the respective ends of an armB, which arm constitutes one side of a triangular frame 4, the other side of said frame being composed of two arms 5 6, which project into or through the frame 0 of the bracket or hanger A and produce the apex e of the triangular frame. I have found in practice that thebest results are obtained by making the arms 1 2 and the arms 5 6 of the frame 4 of equal lengths, while the arm 3 should be slightly shorter, although these dimensions need not in strictness be adhered to. These parts designated by numerals constitute a jointed device, they being pivotally connected and operated together. The permanent or fixed wire or track B is secured to an ear f, projecting from the lower end of the frame cof the hanger A, and the movable Wire 0 C is secured to an arm D, pivotally connected to the apex of the triangular frame 4. Projecting from the frame 4 at the point where the arm connects thereto is a handle F, by means of which to operate said frame to raise the movable wire; or, if desired, the handle may be made to project from the frame at the point where the arm 1 connects thereto, or at a point between the ends of the arm 3 of the frame 4, or at any suitable point. In lieu of the means just described for operating the triangular frame it is obvious that various other devices may be employed, the pith of the invention being the practically straightline motion of the part to which the movable wire is attached. For instance, the means for operating the triangular frame shown in Fig. 2 may be employed, in which arrangement a pulley g is mounted in a suitable bracket g, secured to the hanger A, and over this pulley a pull-cord Eis passed, one end of said pull-cord being secured to the pivoted arm D and the other end allowed to project downwardly within easy reach of an operator,
where it is provided with ahandle E. From this construction it will be seen that by pulling the cord E the apex of the triangular frame 4 will be raised and mark very nearly a straight line and that the power required will be reduced to a minimum. To allow for a slight inward pull of the wire 0 as it describes an arc in rising a yielding attachment or easement will preferably be provided. This yielding attachment or easement may be constructed in various ways. For instance, springs 19 maybe interposed in the guy-wires, as shown in Fig. 2. This may be readily accomplished by dividing the guy-wire and securing the end of one part to a yoke Z) and passing the other part of the guy-wire through a per foration in the cross-bar b of said yoke, the spring I) being made to encircle the last-mentioned part of the guy-wire and adapted to bear at one end on anut b thereon and at the other end on the cross-bar b of the yoke 12'. The same effect may be produced by pivotally connectingthe upper end of the arm 1 to a horizontal bar d, adapted to have a sliding movem entin the hanger A, said bar being provided at its free end with a nut d and a spring 61 made to encircle said bar, hearing at one end against said nut and at the other end against the hangerA; and, again, this easement maybe constructed as shown in Fig. 3,in which case the pivoted arm D will be displaced by a yoke D, the cross-bar D of which is perforated for the reception of a sliding rod D The inner end of the rod D which projects into the yoke D, is provided with a nut D, while the other end of said rod will be provided with a loop for the attachment thereto of the movable wire O. A spring D is made to encircle the rod D being adapted to bear at one end against the nut D and at the other end against the crossbar D It is evident that all of these need not be employed, as anyone of them will be sufi'icicnt.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention Without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the .precise details of construction herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
