ing the chimneys of lamps from and applying them to the burners of the lamps; and the object of our invention is to provide a simple,

inexpensive, and durable lamp-chimney lifter,

which can be easily manipulated, and which will prevent all possibility of the users hands or fingers being burned by contact with the heated chimney.

To the above purposes our invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and arrangement, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of our i1nproved lamp-chimney lifter applied to alampchimney. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same.

ln the said drawings, let A designate our improved lamp'chimney lifter, which is constructed of Wire sufficiently stout for the purpose. Two pieces 0 B of this wire are used, each of which is bent midway of its length into one or more coils c b, there being thus two arms 0 B C diverging from each of the coils in V form. The outer end of each arm B is curved laterally to form a finger D,While the corresponding part of the companion arm 0 is bent to embrace the arm B at its point G of juncture with its finger cl, as shown at G, and is then bent laterally to form afinger F, corresponding to and lying opposite the finger D. This arrangement of fingers D and E is duplicated at the outer ends of each pair of arms, so that there are two pairs of fingers, the one above the other.

In using this appliance the two coils h c are first separated, so as to open the two pairs of jaws or fingers D and E, and they are then caused to embrace the lamp-chimney H above and below its swell. The coils b c are now moved together, so as to clasp the jaws or fingers D E firmly around the chimney, and the latter is thus easily lifted off of or applied to the burner even when hot, without the slightest danger of burning the hands or fingers, and also without any possibility of dropping the chimney.

From the above description it will be seen that the device is simple, and inexpensivein construction, and that it is very easily manipulated. V

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An improved lifter forlamp-chimneys, 850., comprising two wires, each bent into a coil near its middle and formed at the outer end of each of its arms with a laterally-curved finger, the finger of one of each pair of arms being bent to embrace the finger of the companion arm at the point of juncture with the arm, substantially as set forth.
