Description

(No Model.) V
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT Z. GOLES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WINDOW-STOP.
SPEGIFICAJJION- forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,630, dated December 8, 1891. Application filed September 25, 1891. Serial No. 406,857. (No model) T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT Z. GOLES, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Stops, of which the following is a specification.
My device is intended to prevent the opening of a window beyond a certain point, and is to be used mainly at times when the ventilation of a room is desired and when there would otherwise be a possibility of the window being opened from the outside by a burglar or other unauthorized person.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective showing a portion of two window-sashes, to the upper one of which my stop is attached. Fig. 2 shows my stop in section on line x ac, Fig. 3; and Fig. 3
is a front elevation My stop consists of a casting A, which forms a casing for the lever B, hong upon a pin b, upon which it is adapted to slide sidewise as well as turn. In the front edge of the casting is a longitudinal slot C of sufficient size and proper shape to allow the lever to lie flush with the face of the casting when in a vertical position.
D is a lateral slot corresponding in size and shape With the cross arca of the lever and so located and connected with the slot C that when the lever is placed in a horizontal posi- I propose to use this device iu the following manner: It is set into the upper windowframe E, say about five inches from the bottom of the sash, with its front face flush with the window-sash. (See dotted lines, Fig. 2.) When in its normal 0rclosed position, it will not interfere at.all with the ordinary use of the window. When it is desired,-however, to open the window a short distance eitherat the top or bottom, or both, and prevent its being opened farther, it my stop is arranged in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, (full lines,) so that the lever lies in the lateral slotD and in a horizontal position, it will only be possible to raise the lower sash F until it strikes the stop or lever B, beyond which point it cannot be raised. As a result the burglar can neither raise the lower sash farther, nor can he push down the upper sash except as at the same time he pushes down the lower sash, closing the window at the bottom,so that the window can never be opened while this stop is operative more than, say, five inches.
What I claim as my invention is- The window-stop above described, consisting of the casing A, provided with the longitudinal slot C and the lateral slot D, in combination with the pivoted lever B, adapted to lie flush with the front face of said casing When in its vertical position and to lie in said lateral slot when in its horizontal position, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 22d, day of September A. D. 1891.
IIERBERT Z. GOLES.
