Description
ANITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES P. VIGGIN S, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO CASE, MARSH & OO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. L16,4l 2S., dated February 14, 1865. v
To all whom fit may concern: l
Beit known that I, CHARLES P. WIGGINs, ot Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State ot' Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Drag-Saws; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference bein g had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which.-
Figure l is a perspective view; and Fig. 2 a section showing the operation, and Fig. 3 a section of the slide E, which'causes the changes of the operation, as indicated with red line.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the sash D with the slide E, on one end ofwhich is a slot and thumb-screw, c. The other end of this slide is fastened to the sash D with a bolt, This slide, if lowered at c, will bring the saw-bar B (which works on a center at z) in an angle With the stationaryslide C and sash D, and thereby create any desired oscilliatin g or rocking motion. l t will be seen that this arrangement will enable the saw to cut the outsides or corners of the log, and at the same time permit the saw to clean itself from the dust, causing a great saving of power and time.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
On the framework R I place the sword G, with its clamp d, by means of which the sash and saw-bar are held in position while raised or lowered on the adjustable sword Gr, which is supplied with aslot and thumb-screw, I F is the pitman which connects the crank-wheel K with the saw-bar B, and communicates the motion to the saw. L is the spur-wheel, which works into the cogs of the cog-Wheel on the counter-shaft O close to the crank-wheel and is connected by means ofthe line-shaft P with the pulley or power N. M M representboxes; C, the slides of the sash.
I disclaim the sash D, the pitman. F, the sword'G, fly-wheel and gearing, the frame R, the boxes M M, the counter-shaft O, the lineshaft P, the saw-bar B, the stationary slide C, as inventions which have been made previously.
What I claim, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The adjustable slide E, when connected to guide-bar D, and constructed to operate substantially as described.
CHARLES I. WIGGINS.
