Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. TOTMA, OF COLUMBUS, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,7211, dated August 2', 1864.
To all whom it muy concern Beit known lthat I, E. TO'IMAN, of Columbus, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved SaWing-Machine; and I do hereby decare that the following` is a full, ch a", and eX- act description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification,
in whiclil Figure l is a side sectional View of my in vention, taken in the line a' x, Fig. 2. `h`ig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for sawing logs and timber transversely, designed more especially for sawing logs into suitable lengths for fuel.
A represents what may be termed the base of the machine, constructed in any suitable minner, and having an upright, B, at one end of it, through which a vertical shaft, O, passes, the latter having a crank-wheel, D, on its lower end, to which a pitman, E, is attached, said pitman having a saw, F, secured to its, outer end. rlhe shaft O has a box, G, placed on itsv upper end above the upright B, the box being allowed to turn freely on the shaft, and on the top of the box G there is placed a shaft, H, having a bevel-wheel, I, upon it, the latter gearing into a bevel-pinion, J, on the shaft C. To the shaft H a shaft, K, is attached by ai universal joint, a, having a wheel, L, on its outer end, the periphery of which is provided with spurs b, to prevent slipping. The outer end of the shaft H has its bearing in the crosspiece c of a frame, M, composed 0f said crosspiece, and two bars dd, which are connected to opposite sides of the box G by a pivot-bolt,
e, to admit of said frame rising and'falling. The horse is attached to the frame M, and the latter drawn around the shaft C as a center, the base A having a platform, N, upon it for the `horse and wheel L to pass over. rlhe shaft K is rotated by the wheel L and the bevelwheel I, communicating motion to the shaft C through the medium of the bevel-pinion J and thecrank-wheel D and pitman E, communicate a reciprocating movement to the saw F. The
' sha-'ft K, it will be seen, is allowed toV rise and fall with the frame M in consequence of being connected to the shaft H by the universal joint c. A circular track may be made for the wheel L to run upon, or the earth may simply be graded and pounded to form a hard surface.
Thus it will be seen that by a very simple mechanism I obtain an effective sawingmachine, which may be constructed at a small cost, equally so as those which are not provided with any means for applying a motor.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PatentrIhe frame M, attached to a box, G, on a vertical sha-ft, O, and provided with a shaft, K, having a wheel, L, upon it near one end, and connected at its opposite end by a universal joint, a, to a shaft, H, in connection with the bevel-gearing I J, placed on the shafts H and C, the crank-wheel D on the lower end of shaft O, the pitman E, and saw F, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.,
Y E. TOTMAN. Witnesses G. GABY, HAWLY DAVIS.
